When Subject X's people annexed "Earth-616" (which one diverged into Earth-92272), they were able to plant a rumor that people were being air-lifted off the planet in Montana. Peter apparently fell for this trap, and was killed when he reached Montana in a X-Jet, soon enough to trap part of his body into his organic steel form.
