Poitou is an historical region of France and former province of the French kingdom, now encompassed by the departments of Vendée, Deux-Sèvres, and Vienne, along with north Charente and part of western Haute-Vienne.
History
Roaming the world after having been cursed to become a "serpent from the waist down" by her mother Pressyne, Melusine ended up in the forest of Colombiers, where she met Raimond de Lusignan who had accidentally slain his uncle, the count. Melusine soothed Raimond's woes, concealed his guilt. She granted him great wealth, and bore him ten sons, including Geoffrey and Urian, all somewhat deformed. Eventually, Raimond followed Melusine and had a glimpse at her true form, losing her forever. As she vanished, Melusine swore that when she appeared over the castle Lusignan, it would get a new lord within the year. Melusine sired Yith, a daughter with the lower body of a serpent, in Poitou,[1] though the identity of the father remains unrevealed.[2]

Notes
- In Conan: Serpent War #1, a situation is located in "Poitou-Charentes. 1522.". This setting is anachronistic, as Poitou-Charentes is a French administrative region that existed from 1956 to 2016 (before being merged into Nouvelle-Aquitaine) that included the French departments of Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne. It should be noted that Poitou-Charentes did not encompass the whole of Poitou.
