History
The artifact christened "the Prize" was created by the time-traveller Nathaniel Richards before his passing. To ensure that it was found by his firstborn, Reed Richards, he split the device into four parts and scattered each in the Baxter Building at different points in time of Reed's timeline.
Following the latest reconstruction of the Baxter Building, the facility's new security systems detected the presence of one of the pieces of the Prize. After the Fantastic Four discovered it, they became aware of Immortus's plan to acquire it. Immortus was a future descendant of Nathaniel Richards, who had deemed the Prize the single greatest tresure in the universe. Believing that his past selves, Kang, Scarlet Centurion and Rama-Tut, deserved to inherit the Prize as much as he did, Immortus summoned them at the Ark of History in Neverspace. Posing as a new counterpart of Kang called Scion, Reed infiltrated the gathering and pretended to join the hunt for the pieces.
Each of Immortus' variants arrived at different points of the Fantastic Four's history and slaughtered the heroes in the process of obtaining their respective piece of the Prize. Reed secretly intruded on each mission, saving one member of each incarnation of the Fantastic Four from their doom. When Immortus' younger selves returned to the Ark, Scion revealed his ruse and his true identity, and led the time-displaced Fantastic Four in defeating them. After the Time Variance Authority arrested the villains and reset the timelines where they had murdered the Fantastic Four, Reed returned to his present with all the pieces of the Prize. He reconstructed the device, which turned out to be a posthumous recording of Nathaniel Richards revealing to Reed the existence of his half-sister.[1]
