History
Project Hellfire or the Hellfire Program was a secret U.S. Government project spun out of the Weapon Plus Program that specialized in using the occult and demonic influences to create a new class of super soldiers.
Hellverine[]
As part of his plan to lure Wolverine, the former Weapon X, the Hellfire Program's director Father Pike dispatched Bram Straub to hunt down mutants across the United States following Orchis' attack on Krakoa (Earth-616) during the third Hellfire Gala. As predicted, Bram's murder sprees caught the attention of Wolverine and Ghost Rider, who tracked the killings back to the Hellfire Program's base in the Devil's Backbone, Utah. Wolverine and Ghost Rider were captured and had Weapon X helmets forced upon them. Pike then enacted Project Hellfire's true plan: after removing Bagra-ghul from Bram with his dark magic, he grafted the demon onto Wolverine, turning him into Hellverine and ordered him to continue hunting down mutants. However, when Hellverine began resisting Pike's programming and Bram wanted to have Bagra-ghul returned to him, Pike and Bram teleported to Hellverine's location just as Ghost Rider was freed by Talia Warroad and Jeff Bannister and swiftly caught up to them on his Hell Cycle. Hellverine killed Pike just before Ghost Rider exorcised Bagra-ghul from Wolverine and trapped him and Bram together in a stone prison with his Pennance Stare.[2][1][3][4]
Destroyers[]
After Pike's death, General Harms was named as the new director of Project Hellfire and relocated their base to the Pentangle underneath the Pentagon. Harms oversaw their next project: the creation of the Destroyers, which was being secretly funded by the US Secretary of State. However upon their activation, the Destroyers went berserk (with one of them committing suicide upon awakening) and killed numerous personnel throughout the Pentacle and Pentagon. They were confronted by the resurfaced Hellverine, who managed to kill one of them before both parties disappeared after a destructive battle. Believing Hellverine was Wolverine, Harms had him captured by his men but during interrogation, Wolverine realized that Hellverine was actually his formerly deceased son Akihiro, who Bagra-ghul resurrected and possessed after breaking free from Ghost Rider's prison. Wolverine refused to work with Project Hellfire and chose to go after the Destroyers on his own but Harms sent some of his soldiers and a hellhound to follow him. Wolverine tracked down the Destroyer Peter Marmon at his former home but was forced to kill him in self defense, just as the Project Hellfire soldiers and Hellhound following him were killed by the two remaining Destroyers when the hellhound attacked Marmon's wife and daughter. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Leon Townsend, the Destroyers' former commanding officer in life, confronted Harms and Dr. Spivey at the Pentacle and demanded he undergo the same procedure as the Destroyers, believing that he would be able to stop their rampage; Harms reluctantly granted the request. Harms later met with the Secretary of State, who threatened to have him executed for his failure if the Destroyers weren't dealt with quickly, but they were ambushed by the Destroyers, with one of them killing the Secretary. Hellverine appeared and killed the Destroyer but while pursuing the surviving one, Harms shot him with a holy-water laced bullet, which grievously wounded him. Just as Townsend's left following his transformation, Harms returned to the Pentacle with the Secretary's corpse back and had Spivey resurrect her the same way as the Destroyers. With the Project's failure being imminent and remember his own debt to Hell Harms decided to overthrow the US Government to make way for a demonic invasion of the Unite States. While he and the resurrected secretary were en route to the White House, they were killed by the recovered Hellverine and Wolverine with help from Townsend and the surviving Destroyer, Corporal Jamie Doeden. To prevent Project Hellfire from going rogue again, Hellfire left Spivey and the Destroyers in charge of it.[5]See Also
