Project Insight was a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. operation made in direct response to the growing supernatural forces after the Chitauri invasion of New York. It was a clandestine operation fostered by Hydra agents embedded within S.H.I.E.L.D., and made use of Arnim Zola's algorithm which calculated possible future threats to their plans. According to Secretary Alexander Pierce, the project would kill at least twenty million people.

Project Insight involved three heavily armed helicarriers, linked to a satellite, that were designed to pro-actively strike out potential threats against the United States before they actually happened. The project was to be put into effect, though non-Hydra agents aware of the project were unaware of the full extent of the plan.

The three Insight helicarriers were launched from an underwater facility next to the Triskelion on the Potomac River. Once they reached a certain altitude, their guns were intended to fire on all targets Hydra deemed a threat to their plans. Thanks to the actions of Captain America, the Black Widow, Falcon, Nick Fury and Maria Hill, the three Insight helicarriers had their targeting systems reset to fire on each other. All three helicarriers were destroyed, plunging into the Potomac River. One also caused heavy damage to the Triskelion when it fell.[1]
