History

The Qilin Riders are one of the few communities of mortals to inhabit Ta-Lo, the extradimensional realm of the immortal Xian. Long ago, the Xian appointed the Qilin Riders to serve as the guardians of an ancient stone gateway (paifang) which connected Ta-Lo to the Earth realm on a hidden island in the East China Sea.[1] The Qilin Riders have been sworn to safeguard the "Heavenly Weapons" of the Xian, treasures hidden away within Ta-Lo, from any would-be thieves.[2]

To aid in their defense of the gateway to Ta-Lo, the Xian gifted the Qilin Riders with an aptitude for archery as well as the ability to psionically link with the four-legged qilin creatures which inhabit Ta-Lo.[1]

During his quest to destroy Zheng Zu's bloodline, Chieftain Xin mobilized the Qilin Riders against the Five Weapons Society. After kidnapping Jiang Li, the former commander of the Qilin Riders, and taking her back to Ta-Lo, Xin and the Qilin Riders attempted to kill Shang-Chi and his half-sisters but were defeated and forced to retreat.[3] Instead, the Qilin Riders ambushed Deadly Hammer; while they failed to kill her, Qin was able to sever her right hand, which he took back with him to Ta-Lo for his ritual to destroy Zu's lineage.[4] With Hammer's hand, Qin was able to create Taotie Masks for himself and the Riders. When the Jade Emperor demanded Xin's presence in his throne room, Xin ordered the Riders to carry out their mission to destroy the Society. The Qilin Riders arrived at the House of the Deadly Hand to destroy it, but were unexpectedly confronted by Warriors of the Deadly Hand, Master Ling and Jiang Li, who was able to escape Ta Lo and warn the Society of the Riders' invasion. The Riders then donned their Taotie Masks, greatly enhancing their strength.[5] Although the Riders were joined by Xin, who now possessed six of the Ten Rings. Shang-Chi attempted to fight Xin with the remaining four Rings, but lost them to Xin, who ordered the Riders to destroy New York City. Shang-Chi was able to reclaim the Ten Rings and unlock their full potential giving him enough power to easily defeat Xin and the Qilin Riders, destroying their masks in the process. After Xin was taken back to Ta Lo to face justice for his crimes, the Jade Emperor appointed Jiang Li as the new Chieftain of the Qilin Riders.[6]

Powers[]

As the guardians of the interdimensional gateway which links Ta-Lo with the Earth realm on Qilin Island, the Qilin Riders were gifted innate archery abilities by the Xian.[1]

The Xian also gave the Qilin Riders the ability to psionically link with the four-legged qilin creatures which are native to Ta-Lo. The Qilin Riders use this ability to use the qilin as their steeds.[1]
