R.M. Renfield, a once-prominent lawyer, transformed into Dracula's loyal servant following a visit to the vampire's opulent lair at Castle Dracula.

History

R.M. Renfield was a London based lawyer sent to Transylvania to secure a property deal with the enigmatic Count Dracula. At Castle Dracula he was seduced and transformed into a loyal servant of Dracula who revealed himself to be a Vampire. Enticed by the promise of immortality, Renfield succumbs to Dracula's commands. After the vampire drinks his blood, Renfield experiences a complete mental breakdown. Returning to England, he finds himself confined to Dr. Jack Seward's asylum, where he exhibits erratic behavior, obsessively consuming insects and small mammals in an attempt to absorb their "life force."

Renfield's ravings about "the master" and his peculiar habits lead his caretakers to dismiss him as a lunatic, oblivious to the fact that he is unwittingly prophesying Dracula's impending arrival in England. In a disturbing incident, Renfield attacks Seward, cutting his arm and drinking his blood.

During Renfield's institutionalization, Dracula manifests in various animal forms, such as a bat and a wolf, appearing to instruct him. Renfield's mission becomes clear: engineer the arrival of Mina Murray and make her Dracula's bride. However, when Mina visits Renfield in the asylum, he experiences a sudden moral awakening, warning her of the impending danger. In a fit of rage, Dracula materializes in Renfield's cell and assaults him. Despite Renfield's futile attempts to resist, Dracula ultimately breaks his neck.[1]
