History

Conan slayed Wraith, a large white wolf, one evening, unaware that the wolf's master, the immortal sorcerer Ranephi, had been watching the barbarian for some time. At a nearby village, Conan went straight for the local tavern to boast about the wolf, and the townspeople warned him that Ranephi's vengeance will soon come.

Meanwhile, Ranephi released his animals and burned all of his scrolls and books. Conan, anxious to flee before the sorcerer's alleged might, was given a horse by a helpful dwarf, Hannibal, who had been misshaped by Ranephi and whose wife had been stolen by him. The wizard then magically redirected Conan to his castle. Once there, Conan fended off an attack by a fire elemental, and fled into the keep itself. He was herded, unknowingly, to Ranephi himself, and, when he spied the sorcerer, let lose a fatal blow with his axe.

It seems that Ranephi was not blessed with immortality, but rather cursed, and needed someone else to end his life. And he had chosen Conan, who was happy to oblige.[1]
