History

Rangi is the primordial Sky Father of the Polynesian gods. Eons ago, he coupled with the Earth Mother Gaea (known as "Papahanaumoku" or "Papa" in Hawaii, and "Papatuanuku" in Maori), who gave birth to the first generation of Akua: light god Kāne, sea god Kanaloa, war god , and peace and agriculture god Lono. Due to the constant tight embrace of Papa and Rangi, their offspring lived in eternal darkness. The fierce war god Kū proposed that he and his brothers kill their parents in order to end the darkness; but Kāne disagreed and instead used his might to physically push his parents apart, thus separating the sky from the earth and bringing light to the world. Rangi was later succeeded by Kāne as Sky Father of the Polynesian gods.[2]
