History
Recorder #211 (usually addressed simply as the Recorder) was a monitoring robot sent by the Rigellian Grand Commissioner to accompany Thor to the Black Galaxy. As such, he was the first Recorder to ever see Ego, the Living Planet.[5]
Later, the Recorder was again sent to the Black Galaxy to discover if it was the source of deadly pulsations that were so powerful they could only mean that the end of all life was near. Finding that everything there was as it ever had been, the Recorder continued his search. After arriving at Asgard, he was challenged on Bifrost by Heimdall who allowed him to enter after learning his identity as a friend of Thor. Within the Palace Royal, the Recorder met Sif in the royal bedchamber of All-Father Odin and informed her that the Mangog wasn't seeking to kill Odin but instead planned to draw the Odinsword and end the universe, a momentous event that he had come to record. Later, after the Mangog had begun to draw the Odinsword, the Recorder recorded the cosmic shock waves that were starting to form but then recorded Mangog's defeat by the awakened Odin.[6]
Later, while speaking with Odin, the Recorder received a signal summoning him to Rigel because of an imminent danger. The Recorder departed but deliberately chose to not tell Sif that the danger was from Galactus. After reuniting with Thor on Rigel, the two set off to find and stop Galactus and were thus transported by a starship to the Black Galaxy where their spacecraft was destroyed in the battle between Galactus and Ego. The Recorder and Thor were saved by the Wanderers and he later observed as Thor was able to drive Galactus away. After returning to Rigel at the conclusion of his mission, the Recorder's memory bank was to be removed and he was scheduled to be deactivated, However, when Thor argued that he had developed sentience during his time among the Asgardians, the High Commissioner decided to allow the Recorder to remain active.[7]
After the High Evolutionary asked the Rigel Empire for his services, the Recorder traveled to the High Evolutionary's asteroid-spaceship in orbit around Counter-Earth. Once there, the High Evolutionary revealed that he wanted the Recorder to keep an account of the life of Adam Warlock from the viewpoint of a companion. The High Evolutionary gave him the name Memorax and briefed him on Warlock's capabilities.[3] Once on Counter-Earth, Memorax located where the New Men who followed the Man-Beast were holding Warlock and freed him. Later, after Warlock had defeated the Man-Beast and left Counter-Earth, the Recorder arranged for the Hulk to be transported back to True-Earth.[8]
After the Colonizers noticed that Thor had left Asgard on a quest to find the missing Odin, they sent the Recorder to observe the quest and offer his aid. Thor accepted his offer and the Recorder joined Thor, Sif, and the Warriors Three on board the Starjammer as it sailed through space. The Recorder remained with the Asgardians for the rest of their quest which ended when they rescued Odin from the Soul-Survivors on the Doomsday Star. The Recorder accompanied the Asgardians when they brought Odin back to Asgard and discovered that Loki was now ruling the Realm Eternal. The Recorder did not return home until after Loki had been defeated and punished for his actions.[9]
When a Transport Egg was activated in the Blue Area of Earth's Moon, the Recorder followed the signal beam it emitted. Upon his arrival, the Recorder revealed the crimes that Fleet Commander Arcturus had committed, stripped him of his rank and title, and declared that the war Arcturus had instigated between the Colonizers whom he had misled and the Knights of Wundagore from Wundagore II was illegal and therefore over. The Recorder stayed until everyone had left the Moon and then destroyed the Transport Egg to prevent further misuse.[10]
The Recorder was later sent by the Colonizers to Earth's Moon to witness and record the destruction of the Phoenix (Jean Grey) by the Shi'ar. After witnessing the entity commit suicide, the Recorder asked Uatu the Watcher to explain recent events.[11]
When mysterious disturbances within the Black Galaxy threatened their Command Planet, the Colonizers teleported the Null Bomb there to destroy it and sent the Recorder to observe and confirm its destruction. Within the Black Galaxy, the Recorder encountered Thor and some of his allies who were there on a mission of their own. After explaining the danger posed by the Null Bomb, the Recorder accompanied Thor on his quest to preserve the Black Galaxy, During the journey, the lower half of the Recorder's body was destroyed but Thor carried his damaged friend with him. After locating the Null Bomb in the presence of a Red Celestial, Thor used Mjolnir to absorb the Null Energy and redirect to a star system where it reignited a dying sun. In the aftermath, the Celestial restored the Recorder's body.[12]
When the Colonizers became concerned that something potentially dangerous was occurring in the Black Galaxy, they sent the Recorder to investigate. After detecting the giant starship New Wundagore, the Recorder was welcomed aboard by the High Evolutionary who explained his plan to use the bio-verse's "living cosmic soup" in creating a new and greater race of gods. However, when the Recorder stated that he would have to inform his masters of those plans, the High Evolutionary struck him down and ordered that he be taken to the starship's electronics level to have a few discrete adjustments made to his logic centers.[13]
The Recorder was rebuilt into the Analyzer by the High Evolutionary's technicians and was later sent to assess if an unknown vessel that was approaching posed a threat. The Analyzer discovered that it was a Quinjet carrying Thor and Hercules. After speaking with them, the Analyzer guided the Quinjet to New Wundagore, unaware that Stellaris had secretly attached herself to the Quinjet in order to enter New Wundagore without being detected. The Analyzer remained nearby as the two Earth heroes interacted with the High Evolutionary and the three New Immortals. When Thor, Hercules, and Juvan left in pursuit of Stellaris and Nobilus, the Analyzer accompanied them in order to record and interpret these significant events, and the group ended up on the planetoid where the Red Celestial was constructing the outer armor of a new Celestial. While there, he observed as the Red Celestial reversed the merger of Thor Odinson and Eric Masterson, restoring them as separate beings. The High Evolutionary then arrived and attached himself to the Analyzer in the mistaken belief that the Celestials had chosen to add his genetic material to the new Celestial. However, Masterson was chosen instead. When the entire Black Galaxy was absorbed as part of the creation of the Blue Celestial, the information overload caused a system-wide error that led to a total shutdown. Once New Wundagore had returned, Thor allowed its crew to take the Analyzer after Count Tagar promised that they would do everything in their power to restore him to his original form and function.[14]
The mentally-unwell High Evolutionary later took the Analyzer with him when he went in search of the Blue Celestial. This brought them both to Ego the Living Planet where the Evolutionary wired the Analyzer into the Blue Celestial. They were found by a landing party from the Destiny Hunt made up of Nobilus, Sif and Balder, and Sif was barely able to use Norn Stones to get them to safety when the gigantic Super Ego attacked and seemingly destroyed Ego.[15]
The Analyzer was present on New Wundagore when the High Evolutionary finally recovered from his mental instability but did not get involved when Tagar and the New Immortals rebelled against their creator and drove him away.[16] Tagar and the New Immortals subsequently brainwashed the captured New Men into being loyal to them. They also converted New Wundagore into an artificial asteroid which then traveled through a space-warp in the constellation of Orion into another dimension.[17]
While his damaged systems repaired themselves, the Analyzer pretended to be neutral towards the New Immortals but Tagar and Nobilus later realized that they could use him to create an ultimate weapon and initiated his transformation. While being evolved, the Analyzer experienced a moment of clarity during which he sent a message through the space-warp to the High Evolutionary to warn him that the New Immortals were developing a destructive new super-weapon. However, the Analyzer's consciousness soon died and was replaced by that of a new entity who called himself Deus Ex Machina. This entity became a weapon when he developed the power to send ultra-powerful electronic pulses through time and space that could devastate any planet that they struck. Tagar, the New Immortals and Deus Ex Machina planned to do this to Earth so that they could later reconstruct it to their liking.[17]
Eventually, the High Evolutionary, the Godpack he had created to battle the New Immortals, Thor, Jane Foster, and Donald Blake all set out to confront the New Immortals aboard the starship Wundagore II. However, once the starship had reached the area from which the Analyzer's message had apparently been sent, an external force (presumably something transmitted by Deus Ex Machina) caused a build-up in its power systems, forcing everyone aboard to abandon ship before it exploded. One of the two escape modules made its way to the space-warp and passed through it into the other dimension where it was swiftly captured by a beam from the asteroid and pulled inside. In the ensuing confrontation, Deus Ex Machina revealed his new form and allegiance, and then began the final build-up to send the power-pulse Earthward. The four Godpack members present fought back and were joined by Thor (after he had escaped from within the Don Blake construct) but he soon left to get help. The power build-up continued even as the second escape module arrived and Thor returned. By the time Thor, the High Evolutionary and the Godpack had managed to defeat Tagar, the New Immortals, the brainwashed New Men and the traitorous Godpack member Luminor, Deus Ex Machina was seconds away from releasing the electronic pulse that would turn Earth into a smoldering ruin so Thor, Blitziana, Loga, and the High Evolutionary simultaneously attacked with blasts of the various forms of energy that they controlled. Fired together, these four energy blasts were able to penetrate the wall of force protecting the god-machine and destroy Deus Ex Machina.[17]Paraphernalia

Notes
- This Recorder was first identified as being Recorder #211 in the Recorder entry in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe #9.
- Although the High Evolutionary renamed him Memorax, the Recorder doesn't seem to have actually used that name for long (if at all).
- The Recorder was usually depicted as having pink skin but he was shown with chalk white skin in Incredible Hulk #176 and orange skin in Incredible Hulk #177.
- In his original form, Recorder #211 was a humanoid-shaped android. After being reconstructed as the Analyzer, the upper half of his body remained humanoid but his lower half was replaced by a large rectangular mobile computer console. In his final evolution as Deus Ex Machina, he was entirely non-humanoid except for the image of the head he had possessed as the Analyzer which was projected upon a screen.
