History

Based at the Red Room Academy, the Black Widow Ops Program was a Cold War era Soviet espionage training program dedicated to producing the deadliest female spies in the world.

Orphaned girls were selected and trained at the facility in lessons which involved hand-to-hand combat training and weapons training. During training the girls were forced to fight to the death. The girls were also trained in English and western culture, as well as indoctrinated with films, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which contained subliminal messages including instil, fear, and pain. The subjects had their wrists handcuffed to their beds during sleep. Dottie Underwood was a graduate of this program.

During a mission to the Red Room Academy by the SSR and the Howling Commandos, one of the students stabbed Dum-Dum Dugan and killed Junior Juniper.

Natasha Romanoff added that the "graduation ceremony" for the Black Widows involved sterilization, as the creators considered that nothing would drag down a killer more than having children. Yelena Belova detailed that it involved hysterectomia and overall removal of the reproductive organs.

The project overseer since at least mid-1980s, General Dreykov, used the Widows to infiltrate governments and remain an influential man on the world stage while remaining mostly in shadows. Natasha thought the Red Room had stopped existing after she seemingly killed Dreykov in the mission that marked her defection. Instead the attack only injured his daughter Antonia, who Dreykov decided to send through extensive experimental enhancements known as "Project Taskmaster". The Red Room was also relocated to a mobile facility that eventually went airborn and had all Widows subjected to a chemical mind control developed by Melina Vostokoff as opposed to merely a psychological one.

In 2016, Dreykov sent a squad of Widows to neutralize Oksana, an older Widow from Melina's generation developed an antidote gas that immunized the brain's neuropathways from external manipulation. Before dying by Yelena Belova's hands, Oksana sprayed it in Yelena's face and freed her from Dreykov's control. Yelena then decided to recruit Natasha's help to bring down the Red Room once and for all.
