Ricardo hated Reed Richards for being lauded as his mental superior, and planned on infiltrating the Fantastic Four in order to destroy him. He met Thing on his own, befriending him and inviting to his apartment for a cup of coffee.
While there, Ricardo slipped a sleeping pill into Ben's coffee, and while he was asleep, used his Duplication Apparatus to take Ben's form away from him and put it on himself. Then, having a body exactly like the Thing, he went back to the Fantastic Four to take Ben's place.
Ben showed up in his normal human form, but was unable to convince Reed and Sue that he was who he said he was, and left upset.
Reed continued his dangerous experiment, creating a portal to orbit above the equivalent of Earth in the Negative Zone. He planned on venturing through the portal, tethered by a line that "Ben" (who was really Ricardo) would hold, to be able to pull him back through the portal. The tether line snapped, and unable to do much else, Ricardo jumped through to help Reed. While falling into orbit and being burned up in the atmosphere, he realized that Reed was a good man, and took this chance to do a good thing for the first time in his life. He threw Reed back through the Portal, and seemingly burned up in re-entry.[1]
The people of the Negative Zone Earth found Ricardo and took pity on him, using their advanced science to create a suit that could contain his antimatter form on their positive matter form. Out of gratitude, Jones used his scientific knowledge to help protect the planet alongside other refugees.[2]
Some time later, a Negative Zone lifeform imprinted with the personality of Richard Janus attempted to take revenge on the Fantastic Four. It implanted a copy of Ricardo's body with a living portal to the Negative Zone, and sent it to the Baxter Building to attack the Four. After dealing with the portal, they entered the Negative Zone to investigate, where they eventually ended up on the alternate Earth. Ricardo went to meet the Four when they landed, and revealed his identity to them. He thanked Ben and Reed for teaching him what he was missing and explained his time on the alternate Earth to them. Reed stretched his suit that contained his own negative form and gave Ricardo some of the material so he could create a new suit of his own.[2]Attributes

- Nega-Energy Form: Ricardo's body is now composed of unstable anti-matter kept together by nega energy that he can infuse in other objects.[2]

- Fantastic Four Uniforms: Ricardo originally wore a large armor to contain his energy form but Mister Fantastic gave him a portion of his uniform to let him interact with his environment more naturally.[2]
