Roberto was sent to the Milbury Hospital after his mutant abilities manifested and he accidentally burned his girlfriend Juliana. That trauma developed in him a fear of accidentally burning others. In the hospital, he would go on to meet Illyana Rasputin, Sam Guthrie, and Rahne Sinclair; fellow mutants with their own dark past. Sometime later they would get another fellow mutant Danielle Moonstar who's powers were unknown. As days passed the children warm up to each other and eventually the group came together when Illyana spikes Cecilia Reyes' coffee with sleeping pills, allowing them to run amok on the grounds. They collectively believed that they are being trained to become X-Mes, hence the strict supervision, as well as Dr. Reyes reminding them that they were considered dangerous and should not leave until they are under control.

Roberto was swimming with who he believes to be Illyana, until she disappeared and the burning manifestation of his girlfriend Juliana appeared. Reyes awakened in time and put a panicking Roberto out in the pool. He demanded that they allowed to leave and during the confrontation, Reyes put Illyana in a solitary confinement. Eventually the group discovered that Reyes has been lying and that a corporation known as the Essex Corporation planned on using them as mutant killers. However before this could happen the Demon Bear of manifestation of Dani's own powers killed Reyes and proceeded to hunt them. Eventually, Roberto overcame his fear of burning others and along with Sam aided Illyana in fighting off the Demon Bear. As the sun rose, the New Mutants collected their belongings. Sam noticed that the barrier was no longer around them and they all decided to head into town which Reyes had previously told them that the nearest town was twenty miles out. Not knowing if she was telling the truth, they all decide to head out together as a family; facing the unknown.[1]
