After continuously clashing with her controlling Aunt Carrie, the rebellious teenager Anna Marie ran away from home, earning herself the nickname of "Rogue." Soon after, Rogue's Mutant ability emerged. With just a touch, she had the uncontrollable ability to absorb the energy of others through physical contact, temporarily mimicking their abilities, powers, memories, and even personality. The Mutant, Mystique, adopted Rogue as her own daughter when the two met, and she subsequently joined Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. During a clash with Captain Marvel while on one of her early Brotherhood missions, Rogue accidentally absorbed her foe's memories and powers. Driven to a mental breakdown by the incident, Rogue sought the help of Mystique's enemies, the X-Men. She was eventually accepted as a member of the team and grew to be a powerful and loyal X-Men.
