Synopsis for "When You Wish Upon a Star"
Secret Wars II continues from Alpha Flight #28...
The Beyonder grants Rick Jones, Brandy Clark, and Cindy Adams their wishes! But is what they wish what they really want?
Secret Wars II continues in Avengers #261...
Rick Jones, Brandy Clark and Cindy Adams are found by the entity known as the Beyonder who is seeking the meaning of desire. Seeing in their thoughts the incompleteness they feel, he decides to see if they would truly feel complete if they had all their desires met. The Beyonder cures Rick Jones of cancer, removes the Wraith mind from Cindy and turns Brandy Clark once more into Starshine. The trio is in disbelief as the Beyonder offers to fulfill all their wishes. He then turns Rick into a second Hulk and then sends Rick & Brandy into Limbo to retrieve the Wraith that had killed Cindy’s parents. The Beyonder takes two glowing orbs that are the lifeforces of Cindy’s parents from the Wraith and sends it back to Limbo, then restores Cindy’s parents. Still not understanding desire, the Beyonder restores Rick back to his normal human form, though cured of cancer. He also restores Brandy to human form and fulfills her wish by sending her across countless galaxies to be by the side of her true love, Rom.
Notes
- When Marvel reprinted the Secret Wars II Omnibus, this issue was omitted from the collection as Marvel no longer retains the rights to ROM the Spaceknight.
- This is the only issue of Rom in which the title character does not make a full appearance. Instead, Rom only appears in a recap and is mentioned several times. However, Rom and the Spaceknight Squadron do appear in Rom Annual #4 during the gap between Rom #71 and 73.
- Incredible Hulk #248–249 had previously established that the hunting cabin owned by General Ross was located in the Colorado Rockies, but this issue's story doesn't actually mention that the cabin is in Colorado.
- A crucial element of this issue's story is the idea that the "spirits" or "souls" of those killed when their brains are fed upon by Dire Wraiths survive within the bodies of the Wraiths who killed them and are not wherever human souls usually go after death. Most previous and all subsequent stories only have the Dire Wraiths absorbing the minds and memories of those they kill by feeding upon their brains. However, the Omniscient Narrative in Rom Annual #3 had stated that the brain-feeding ability of the Dire Wraiths involved them stealing the minds, memories, souls and physical shapes of their victims.
