Professional History

Romita's Raiders were members of an art apprentice program at Marvel Comics run primarily by Art Director John Romita. The program was initiated in 1984 by Jim Shooter. The Raiders got their name unofficially in the mid-1980s. Then-Spider-Man-editor James Owsley wrote a memo to Jim Shooter and John Romita about art corrections on a SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL, in which he referred to the art correction team as "a crack suicide squad". Thinking that they deserved their own original name, James Fry made a sign that read "Don't call us a suicide squad! We are ROMITA's RAIDERS!" The name stuck. While Romita mainly did cover corrections the Raiders worked, usually uncredited, on interior pages.
