History

Rydyard Kipling was a British author who wrote the 1899 poem "The White Man's Burden".[1] He also wrote "Hymn Before Action", a poem taking the form of a prayer by troops on the eve of a battle.[2]

The former poem was seen by many as championing the superiority of imperialism. The voortrekkers (roaming Boers) left South Africa in the early 20th century, frustrated by the 2nd Boer War. They named the country Rudyarda to honor Kipling.[1]

Notes

  • Kipling is mentioned in the story "Blood & Gutz: Water Rites" (published in Savage Tales (Vol. 2) #2), which takes place in an unidentified reality, when the main character, Blood, quotes Kipling's poem "If—".[3]
