History
Deathlok Project, Paterson[]
Doctor Hu was a cybersurgeon[1] working for Cybertek Systems, Inc, the applied cybernetics division of Roxxon Oil, in Paterson, New Jersey. She was involved in the Deathlok project, aiming to create a cyborg super-soldier with an organic brain, for which she and fellow cybersurgeon Dr. Kimble transplanted the living human brain of Colonel John Kelly to a cyborg body, so that Kelly would control the prosthetics - although Kelly's control over the machine was not strictly required, and the brain was intended to be solely to storage memory.[2] Kimble, Hu and other Cybertek employees participated in a demonstration in the Cybertek Weapons Development Testing Facility 4,[3] during which the cyborg's computer electrocuted and killed Kelly's brain[4] causing the cyborg to react unpredictably. Hu noticed the problem, diagnosing Kelly's death, and Cybertek technician Stanley Cross proposed to stop the test, but Cybertek head Harlan Ryker insisted they continue.[3]
The test left Kelly's brain useless, Hu discarding it when they returned to Paterson, as she felt there was no need for an autopsy. Scientist William Hansen however recovered it, with permission,[5] to experiment on it during his free time.[6] Meanwhile Ryker demanded that his technicians find and correct the cause of the mistake, and that Hu and Kimble prepare for a new brain transplant the following day. Hansen believed they could correct the glitch, but was skeptic that Hu and Kimble would have the operation ready, not to mention the issue of finding a brain donor. Ryker kidnapped Cybertek programmer Michael Collins to prevent him from revealing sensitive information and to use his brain, and had his secretary Laurie make Hu, Kimble and a medical team to have everything ready.[5] Cybertek's Stanley Cross was supposed to lobotomize Collins' brain, but he made a shoddy job that went undetected.[7] Hu opposed to using Collins' brain, because Collins had been a highly ethical man and that may interfere with Deathlok's war-machine programming, but Ryker disregarded her complains.[8] Hu was also worried that the organics in the cyborg may reject Collins' untested brain, so she asked for Collins' body to be kept in ice, as a potential organ bank should it be needed. Ryker agreed to this, but it was proven unneccessary; however, Collins' body was preserved for some time.[9] Hu and Kimble then transplanted Collins' brain successfully to the cyborg Deathlok[5]
Deathlok's body was sent to the South American country Estrella, to protect Roxxon's interests there from local guerrillas. A number of Cybertek employees involved in the proyect, including Hu, travelled to Estrella to oversee the operation. Deathlok succesfully destroyed a guerrilla campment, but Collins' mind took over in time to prevent Deathlok from killing the last enemy fighters. Hansen detected the glitch and, while Roxxon was happy with the results, Ryker insisted the Cybertek team review and correct the problem in Paterson. Once there, Hansen correctly theorized that Collins' brain may have overrid the system, and Cross coincided that, after correcting the bug that had killed Kelly, the computer would be unable to kill the brain; Hu explained that the brain was supposed to be storage, and weapons designer Ben Jacobs suggested that the system may not be working as they expected. Ryker understood that Collins, a pacificist who did not support the Deathlok project, was in control of the Deathlok cyborg. Indeed, Collins took over the cyborg at that point and tried to escape, running through the facilities. Ryker and his staff checked Deathlok's progress through a computer, but Hu noticed immediately how the security guards had lost Deathlok. She then saw Ryker and Jacobs using Cybertek technology to try and stop Deathlok, but they failed. Jacobs drove his own Cybertank against Deathlok, but Deathlok wrecked the tank and left Jacobs trapped in its ruins, a discarded helmet stuck on his head, before escaping the facilities; Hu joined Ryker and Cross when they went to check on Jacobs, and she was surprised to find him that way.[5]
Deathlok became a superpowered crimefighter in Coney Island, and subject of fuzzy news about a "robot vigilante" in the Daily Bugle that could not identify him. Hansen was convinced that this person was Collins, and shared this theory with his partners. At Ryker's request, Hu tried to feed Collins' psych profile to a computer to see whether the theory was compatible with known facts, but her programming was inconclusive. Ryker still concluded that Collins would contact either his wife Tracy or his best friend Jim Dworman, so he decided to keep these two people under a watchful eye, then send a superhuman agent to capture Deathlok. While he found Deathlok, he failed to apprehend him.[8] Deathlok soon understood that Cybertek was his enemy and, after spoiling the Estrella operation, confronted Ryker. Ryker revealed he still had Collins' body in good state, and claimed that Hu could restore Collins' brain to his original body, in an attempt to force Deathlok to work for Ryker. However, Collins' morals prevailed and, soon afterward, Cybertek's illegal deals were exposed, the company disbanded and its main staff, including Ryker, Hu and Kimble, were either arrested[2] or had arrest warrants on them.[4] Apparently Hu escaped capture by fleeing to another country, probably with Collins' body on tow,[4] for Deathlok combed information networks soon afterward in a futile attempt to find either Hu or Collins' body.[2]
Cyberwarrior operation, Paris[]
Hu, Kimble, Ryker and several other Cybertek employees escaped to Paris, France to avoid jail, hiding in an underground base to build an army of Cyberwarriors, almost-robotic drones with non-active organic brains, to sell them all around the world. Cross, Kimble, Hu and other people worked on the improvement of the Cyberwarriors to an excellent success.[4] Soon afterward,
Their activities however escaped not to Roxxon's eye: Claiming that the Cyberwarriors illegally used Roxxon's technology, Roxxon sent several agents, including Deathlok, to stop the Paris operation and stop them. To persuade Deathlok,[4] Roxxon Vice Presidente of International Development Clayton Burr[8] told him that Hu had Collins' body, which was true; soon afterward, Nick Fury of international law enforcement SHIELD claimed that Burr was probably lying, as Fury himself had been unable to find Collins' body.[4] The Roxxon agents raided the secret base, and the Cyberwarriors proved unable to stop them.[10] At that point, Hu, Cross and several others were attending a staff meeting where Ryker explained the results of his project and how he had sold Cyberwarriors to the Genesis Coalition.[7] Mid-speech, Ryker was suddenly contacted by another of his agents, Mainframe, who reported how Deathlok and his peers were destroying the stock of Cyberwarriors, and Ryker ordered to abandon the base, taking as many Cyberwarriors as possible.[10]
The team (including Cross, Hu, Jacobs, Kimble, Mainframe, and Ryker) regrouped in a secondary headquarters, Cyberbase, under the outskirts of Paris, where Hu immediately started working on an amputated brain. Kimble critized Ryker for using lies to obtain brains of patients that may have survived, as that their previous bribery to medical institutions to obtain brains from recent corpses was already bordering the limits of Kimble's ethics. Ryker then intimidated Kimble, and Hu tried to protect Kimble by rewording the later's statement more favorably, claiming that the change was being implemented too quickly. They were then found and attacked by Deathlok and his allies Siege (Kelly's software-based restored consciousness controlling a Cyberwarrior) and the cyborg bounty hunter Coldblood. In an attempt to gain leverage, Ryker murdered Hu, then told Deathlok that the only living person who could restore Collins' brain to his original body was Kimble - who was on Ryker's sight at the moment, thus being a valuable hostage. Siege threatened to kill Ryker anyway, and Ryker also threatened with a bomb detonation in the base.[1] Kimble released himself; but Ryker teleported away with Jacobs, abandoning the rest of his allies. Cross and the other Cybertek scientists helped Deathlok and his allies stop the detonation, although the Cyberbase was destroyed and Collins' body was lost underground in France. Both Ryker and Burr were arrested soon afterward.[11]
Even after Hu's death, Deathlok still looked for mentions of her in online information, looking for a way to return to his original body.[12]Attributes
