History
Samuel Pinder was the uncle of Edmond Winshed, his sister's son. Since Edmond was a child Sam mistreated him by emphasizing the fact of male virility. Years later Sam severely beat Edmond, threatening him not to tell his parents anything, because he feared that he was having an affair with his young wife Elinore, who besides Alice Rimes was the only one Edmond spoke to and confided in. During Edmond's funeral eulogy, due to Alice's accusations towards her family, Samuel rudely sent Alice away by throwing her into the nearby swamp, and at the end of the funeral in a rage he went to Alice again wanting to teach her a lesson, but the Man-Thing came to Alice's aid and stopped him and burned his arm. During the showdown, where Edmond's family and the gym teacher wanted to force Alice to give them Edmond's diary, the excess of emotions caused the Man-Thing to intervene and punish all the members of the family, and in particular he threw Sam into some barbells so as to break his spine and make him disabled, the furthest thing from the concept of a manly man.[1]
