History
When Jean was forced to undergo a psychic lobotomy by the Shi'ar, removing her Phoenix powers, she and Cyclops left the X-Men. Jean could not cope with the horrors of what she did as Dark Phoenix. She and Scott married privately, and without their friends present. Jean only recovered mentally after Magneto kidnapped her, offering to restore her powers as Phoenix, and Jean willingly rejected the power for herself instead of becoming a monster again.
Cyclops continued to lead and work with the X-Men over the next eight years. Their daughter, Rachel, was born, and Jean spent most of her time caring for Rachel and instructing the New Mutants. Unbeknownst to Scott, however, the Phoenix Force had resurfaced and Jean was only pretending to be powerless. Jean's secret eventually came out when the Sentinels were preparing to eliminate all mutants in America. She left rather than confront Scott about her powers.
The X-Men and Magneto prepared a last-ditch effort to destroy Master Mold in New York, but were uncovered by the Sentinels. Jean returned as the Phoenix and provided the power needed to end the Sentinel threat. In the end, however, Scott and his daughter watched Phoenix leave Earth forever rather than risk another Dark Phoenix incident.
