History

The Secret Avengers was a resistance group formed by superheroes who were opposed to being forced to register with the government by the passage of the Super-hero Registration Act on moral grounds. They were led by Captain America. They were opposed by the Initiative, which was led by Iron Man.

One day, Captain America led the Secret Avengers on a mission to free captured unregistered superheroes being held in Prison 42 in the Negative Zone, believing them to be political prisoners. Iron Man learned of the jailbreak from spies within the Secret Avengers' ranks and organized his forces in an ambush, which he bolstered with S.H.I.E.L.D. troops and conscripted villains. However, the self-destruct system in the prison was activated; Black Panther blamed Iron Man's side while Maria Hill of S.H.I.E.L.D. blamed Panther.[1] It would be learned years later that the Skrulls were responsible for the system's activation.[2] Everyone on both sides of the conflict rushed to escape through the teleportation power of the hero Cloak, who dropped them all in midair in St. Louis.

Unfortunately, Cloak could not shut off his powers fast enough to block out the explosion, which caused a beam of explosive energy to strike the ground in St. Louis, setting off a series of explosions that toppled buildings, killed super heroes, and left millions dead. Each side blamed the other for the cataclysm and became even more divided. This left the door open for the Skrull Invasion and the reign of Norman Osborn. The Secret Avengers were eventually dissolved and reorganized into a defense force in the newly organized Blue.[1]
