Child of the Vault[]

Serafina (Earth-616) from X-Men Vol 2 191 0002

Serafina is a valuable member of the Children of the Vault, an advanced society developed in hold of the Conquistador ship, which had been subjected to temporal acceleration in Peru. In thirty years that passed on Earth, the humans trapped inside the Vault lived for 6,000 years, integrating their evolutionary process with technology and becoming post-humans. As an artificially augmented post-human, Serafina developed a great affinity with machines.[1][5] Their time capsule had been set to open after a global catastrophe eliminated humanity, as such, the Children of the Vault saw themselves as the rightful inheritors of Earth. However, the chaos unleashed during M-Day anticipated their activation. Considering themselves a different species from both humans and mutants, the Children of the Vault decided to eliminate both secretly.[6]

However, the mutant Sabretooth witnessed their awakening, immediately becoming a target to the Children since he endangered their anonymity.[1] Alongside her fellow Child Sangre, Serafina tracked Sabretooth to Nogales, Mexico, where she detonated a singularity bomb. In order to cause a distraction, Serafina spared the life of a young girl but not before brainwashing her into believing the terrorist attack had been made by Sabretooth's allies, the X-Men.[7] In order to prevent Sabretooth and the X-Men from sharing their knowledge about the Children of the Vault's existence, Serafina manipulated Northstar and Aurora into attacking the Xavier Institute.[8]

As their lackeys failed in their mission due to the unexpected intervention of Cable, Serafina infiltrated the institute herself, where she became interested in the X-Man Cannonball.[9] Using the comatose Lady Mastermind's illusion abilities, Serafina created a simulation in which she was married to Cannonball under the name "Sarah" only to torment him. Cannonball eventually caught on to the unrealism of the world after Serafina was intercepted by Wolverine. She easily disposed of him by turning his Adamantium skeleton against him by poisoning it. After she defeated Cannonball, she escaped the X-Mansion to return with her fellow Children.[1]

Serafina's failure led the upset Children to launch an all-out attack on the superheroes. The X-Men took the fight to them by assembling a new team led by Rogue, which was sent to foil the Children's plans to destroy the Xavier Institute. In the battle, Serafina was able to easily defeat the Omega Sentinel Karima Shapandar and Sabretooth, who had Nano-Sentinels in his blood, through her technopathic powers. When Cannonball uselessly tried to reach through to her based on the illusory life they had shared, she expressed indifference. Blasting around the Conquistador ship, Cannonball drove her into its hull at full force, leaving her seemingly lifeless body behind.[6][10]

Collision[]

Although defeated, the Children of the Vault were able to retreat to the Wild Sentinel Factory in Ecuador.[10] Serafina resurfaced with other Children of the Vault who had returned to Earth to retrieve Luz, a runaway Child who had found shelter with Rogue and Magneto in India. The Children of the Vault defeated the X-Men, opting to capture both Rogue, for her former crimes against their society, and as per Serafina's suggestion, Magneto, who she recognized as harboring great powers. This would allow him to be used to sustain the Angelfire, a device used to power the Children of the Vault's trans-dimensional city, the Corridor.[11] Thanks to Luz's intervention, the X-Men banished the Children of the Vault from Earth one more time.[12]

Post-Human Invasion[]

After being upgraded to become a second-level Child by the City, Serafina was sent on a mission for the Vault, but was captured by Orchis at an unknown period in time and through unknown means in order to serve them as a weapon.[4] She was accidentally freed during the X-Men's raid on the Orchis Hub and immediately ran away after being recognized.[5] She fled to the Vault built within the ruins of the Wild Sentinel Factory, in Ecuador, being able to vanish before Wolverine could apprehend her. Professor X and Cyclops sent the new Wolverine, Synch, and Darwin to infiltrate the Vault and collect intel about the Children of the Vault.[2]

For more than five hundred years, the three X-Men battled the Children of the Vault in the temporally accelerated environment. Serafina was resurrected and further enhanced by the City as a third-generation of the Children. She was violently approached by Wolverine and Synch, so Synch could copy her powers to find a captured Darwin. Although Synch managed to ultimately break free from the Vault, the Children of the Vault had access to Darwin's adaptive mutant powers, which would allow them to become fourth-generation post-humans.[4]

The Children of the Vault planned to adapt themselves to subdue the entire population of the world and become their dominant class. However, mutantkind planned to counter their schemes. The mutant inventor Forge implemented Project: Blackbox, a dome that enveloped the Vault's entrance and trapped the Children in a simulation in which they believed to have achieved success. However, Serafina was able to see through the ruse[13] and furtively followed Forge in his journey inside the Vault.[14] She interrogated him as to his motives and let him go with Wolverine to repay the X-Men for freeing her.[15]

Attributes

Powers

Serafina is one of the Children of the Vault, being a prominent citizen of their post-human society in which individuals are created using state-of-the-art technology. The integration between human and machine components provides the Children with unique arrays of abilities[1] and the capacity for upgrades.[4]

  • Technopathy: Serafina's advanced body is able to interface with machines, allowing her to to disrupt and manipulate the processes of any kind of artificial gadget[8] and even nano-machines.[10] She could easily control the SS Conquistador remotely.[10] Normally, she utilizes a series of retractable wires to connect herself to the systems she is seizing.[8]
  • Enhanced Senses: Serafina's sensory systems diverge from those of an ordinary human being. She is able to use her components to acquire very precise data of her surroundings.[7] She is also able to see beyond the visible spectrum which grants her a level of immunity to telepathic illusions and simulations.[6][13]
  • Cloaking: At will, Serafina's physical form can go completely undetected, both invisible to the naked eye and to telepaths.[9] She was able extend her cloak to the entirety of the Conquistador flying ship, rendering her comrades undetected as well.[7][6]
  • Mind Control: By interfacing with other organisms, Serafina has a certain level of mind-control. She can take over others' minds and create false memories.[8][2] By hacking the life-support systems which monitored Lady Mastermind, she was able to boost her illusory powers by merging the comatose mutant's abilities to her own.[1]
  • Teleportation: Serafina's systems seem to be able to generate a teleporting field and translocate her body across short distances.[5]

  • Adamantium-Nine Throwing Darts: As an unusual gadget, Serafina possessed darts of an unstable version of Adamantium which she used to poison Wolverine's skeleton.[1]
