Professional History
Sergio Melià was fond of comics since his early childhood, but he did not expect to work professionally in that field, both because his reference artists were all foreigners, and because Castellón did not offer many chances for it; the "capital of comics" in Spain was Barcelona at the time. But Melià teamed up with authors from the nearby city of Villareal to publish the fanzines "Zapasta" [3] #8, and "Wopitti Whop!" #1 (both 1989) [1]. These fanzines took him to festivals in Barcelona, where professional opportunities arose.[3]
In the early 90s, several Spanish authors (famously Carlos Pacheco and Salvador Larroca) began working for Marvel and DC in what was unofficially known as "el desembarco" ("the landing"). Melià joined this group primarily as inker[3] for Ghost Rider (Vol. 3) #52-79 (1994-96; also cover artist Ghost Rider (Vol. 3) #61-79, 1995-96); Age of Apocalypse: The Chosen (1995); Star Trek: Voyager #3 to Star Trek: Voyager #12 (1996-97); and the entire Kitty Pryde: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. limited series (1997).[4] He later stated that, although his job was inking and not drawing, he did his best to absorb as much knowledge about drawing from other artists as possible , after which he was prepared to work professionally as a penciler.
In the early 2000s, instead of continuing in the American market, he switched to Franco-Belgian comics or bande dessinée (drawn strip). His initial drawing was too realistic, when the bande dessinée is characterized by the Ligne claire (clear line). Having difficulty selling his works, he experimented with other styles; and declares having had moments of frustration, but the networks helped him when the public and professionals gave him useful advice.[3] During this time, he also worked on erotic comics for the magazine Eros Comix Nº 4 to 24 (2001-2003), published by Spanish Dolmen Editorial).[1]
In 2005, he published Franco-Belgian style albums with the Caravelle publishing house, Apocalypstick and Une mansarde à Paris,[3] the latter published in Spain by Dibbuks as Una buhardilla en Paris that same year.[1] Later he participated in the compilation Cambio Climático (2010), of Divina Pastora Foundation; and Xiulit magazine (No. 8 and 39-41, 2015), published by Pablo Herranz, Editor.[1]
The Museu de Belles Arts de Castelló dedicated a free exhibition to him from October 22, 2022 to January 8, 2023. [1]Work History
