History
Sharon Carter was a field agent with S.H.I.E.L.D.. She was also the grandniece of S.H.I.E.L.D. founder Peggy Carter, but she didn't talk about this part of her life much to avoid receiving special treatment.[5] She was given a mission by Director Nick Fury to discreetly monitor and protect Steven Rogers at his home when he was off duty, adopting a cover as a nurse, moving into an adjacent apartment, and sometimes flirting with him.[2] However, she never told her aunt about her assignment, feeling that Peggy kept so many secrets already that she didn't want her aunt to have to keep one from Steve after everything he'd come to mean to her.[5]
Hydra Conspiracy[]
The assignment came to an abrupt end one night when she heard gunshots, and crept into Steve apartment to find not only her charge, but also Fury, who had been shot and grievously wounded by sniper fire from a nearby building. Carter called in support and administered first aid, while Rogers left to pursue the shooter.
The incident proved to be part of a sequence of events leading to a coup engineered by hidden elements of Hydra. At first she was alarmed by orders for S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to capture Steve Rogers, and demanded Agent Sitwell to let the agents know the reason they were hunting down Captain America. World Security Council Secretary Alexander Pierce walked in and claimed that Rogers withheld information about Fury's death.
Later at the Triskelion, she overheard Rogers announcing through the PA that Hydra had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and were planning on using Project Insight to commit mass murder, and urged every clean agent to stand up. She bore witness to an armed takeover in an operations room, and while she did her best to prevent Hydra's plans from coming to fruition, a gunfight erupted that gave Hydra the chance to commence a launch sequence for Project Insight.
Carter got through the ordeal of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s subsequent collapse, and turned instead to the CIA, where she could continue to use her skills to best effect.[2]
Civil War[]
Two years later, Sharon attended the funeral of her aunt Peggy in London, where she gave a eulogy. Steve, being Peggy's former flame, was in attendance and was shocked to discover Sharon was Peggy's niece. Sharon later assured him that she didn't tell Peggy that she was assigned to surveil him two years prior. As the conversation was going on, there was a bombing at the Vienna International Centre, where the United Nations was meeting to ratify the Sokovia Accords. News outlets quickly reported that Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, was the prime suspect.
After informing Steve that there was a shoot-to-kill order on Barnes, Sharon immediately travelled to Berlin to join fellow CIA agent Everett Ross at the Joint Counter Terrorist Centre headquarters. Meanwhile, Steve and his partner Sam Wilson attempted to apprehend Barnes themselves in Bucharest, despite going against the Sokovia Accords. Their attempt failed, due to the intervention of the Prince T'Challa, the Black Panther, who wanted revenge on Barnes for allegedly killing his father in the bombing. The Joint Counter Terrorist Centre arrested all four of them.
At the Joint Counter Terrorist Centre, Sharon and Steve started to suspect Barnes was framed and the actual culprit wanted Barnes to be captured by them. The facility went into shutdown before they could put it all together. In the ensuing chaos, Barnes escaped, despite the best efforts of Sharon, Prince T'Challa, the Black Widow, and Iron Man. Steve and Sam had likewise disappeared.
The next day, Sharon met up with Steve and gave him back his shield and Sam's Falcon suit. They were with Barnes and seemed even more sure that he was framed, so Sharon just told Steve he owed her one, before kissing Steve goodbye.[5]
The Blip[]
Sharon was believed by the Avengers to be one of the victims of Thanos, as her image was listed among those of their missing allies.[6] However, Sharon had survived and was living in Madripoor to stay under the radar and avoid extradition.[7]Paraphernalia
