History

Origins and Early Adventures[]

Shela Sexton first discovered her powers after she accidentally swapped places with the principal when she was in the ninth grade at Ransom High School. She came out to her parents as a mutant with their support. Yet, when she came out as transgender she was ostracized by them.[1]

Before turning 19 years old, Shela, her longtime classmate Morgan Red, and Hibbert, a genetically engineered flying turtle, moved in together. They joined a support group for transgender mutants led by D-Man at the Matt Baker House LGBTQIA+ youth center in Ridgewood, Queens, New York. Shela would eventually become a thief targeting corrupt organizations and individuals with Morgan providing technical support.[1]

One day, she ran into Emma Frost and Destiny, who showed Shela that in the future she would accidentally get her friend Morgan killed with her powers. Emma tried to convince Shela to be trained, but she refused.[1]

She learned of an onyx needle that could prevent her from killing Morgan and secretly tried to obtain the object without Morgan's knowledge, but this only caused a strain on their relationship. Shela was forced to tell Morgan about the vision, and then reluctantly she agreed to go to Krakoa and train with Emma.[1]

Lost Club[]

On Krakoa, Shela joined the Lost Club and bonded with all of the members of the Club, especially Cerebella. Along with Morgan, Wolfsbane, Cerebella, and Leo Eng, Shela was abducted by the U-Men during a rally in Washington Square Park.[3] To make her friends escape, Shela swapped place with a U-Man and then with Martha, saving everyone; unfortunately she had to bring everyone on the top of the U-Men's base, where she recognized the place Morgan would've died. She fell from the building and didn't swap places with Morgan, but Leo used her telekinesis to stop her in the middle of the air and Wolfsbane caught her. The friends were safe, proving Destiny's vision to be wrong.[4]

Shela as "BlasterDame"

Sometimes later, after helping the New Mutants free mutants imprisoned by U-Men, Shela, Cerebella, and Gabby planned to get inside Nefaria mansion, with the purpose of defeating the Maggia's boss and rob him. Since he was recruiting for a new interaction of the Lethal Legion, the three decided to go undercover as supervillains to infiltrate the mansion: Shela called herself "BlasterDame".[2] At the recruiting, Nefaria forced the all the supervillains to participate in a combat tournament to decide which one of them will be part of the Legion: Shela had to fight Psi-Borg and Sweet William and won both the encounters. She got drunk during the dinner that followed and accidentally swapped places with Scout, who was going to fight Nefaria.[5] The Lost Club escaped, after the New Mutants also came at the mansion and engaged in a fight with Nefaria, who meanwhile discovered the Club's plan; in the end they got away, along with the New Mutants and Morgan Red, having stole the Weird Engine.[6] On the run, she and Morgan discussed about the fact she was ignoring him while she was and Krakoa and because of their miscommunication they got evicted from their apartment: Shela advised him to also embrace the change, like she was doing: in the meantime the Legion attacked them again and retrieved the Engine. [7] The New Mutants and the Lost Club together organized another heist and defeated the Legion. Back on Krakoa, she then made peace with Morgan and started officially dating Martha.[8]

Shela joined Bishop's response team to offer aid to the people of Milford. Using her mutant gifts,Escapade swapped place with individuals still trapped under debris to facilitate the rescuing.[9]

X-Corp[]

Escapade was part of the reinforcement team called by Mirage to strike an attack against Selene and prevent her ascension as a goddess.[10] Since Selene needed Tempo's power to ascend, Shela swapped places with her, foiling her plans.[11]

Avengers Academy[]

Shela was aboard a commercial airplane hijacked by Hydra agents and was nearly killed attempting to rescue its hostages. After a close save by the X-Men, as she fell to Earth, she was recruited by Emma Frost for the new Avengers Academy.[12] Around this time, Shela and Martha broke up, but remained really close friends.[13]

Shela started following classes along with the rest of her cohort, composed by Moon Girl, Captain America, Bloodline, Red Goblin, and Kid Juggernaut. She became roommate with Bloodline and they formed a strong bond together.[14] While she was at the Academy, her parents flagged her as missing in many Police Department in the Eastern Coast, but Captain Marvel, director of the school, offered to protect Shela and let her stay.[15]

Along with the rest of her classmates she found herself fighting Squid Kid's Sinister Six: she was tasked to find and save Stanley Osborn, Red Goblin's brother, who had been kidnapped by the Six. She convinced Stanley's warden, Billy Connors to help her release the child from the cage had been locked in: she swapped place with Osborn and let the two go away safely; she then was too released by Kid Juggernaut. Also, she and Moon Girl helped Mysteriant to give away to the public all the secret information Squid Kid stole, causing Cuttle's plane to be foiled and the Sinister Six as a group to be disbanded.[16]

Shela switching with the Avengers Academy

The day the Academy visited Van Dyne Designs Studios to have their costumes and clothes revised, Janet Van Dyne didn't change much Shela's outfit, complementing Jumbo Carnation's design; instead, her tech was renovated, adding repulsors, tractor beams, and port to insert the Nano-glitter bombs into her gloves. Shela also asked for a new outfit apt to first dates, as she was planning to ask Brielle out: Van Dyne gifted her a new yellow dress to use for that future occasion.[17] Under Martha and Morgan's advice, Shela finally went on a date with Brielle; the two kissed, but Brielle seemingly flinched after they kissed, causing Shela to panic and run away. Back at the Avengers Academy, while crying on the bed, she was ambushed by Emplate.[13]

Emplate imprisoned her in the same dimension that he was trapped in. He forced Shela to wear a dress of a past victim and dine with him. Emplate managed to take her mutant powers, which allowed him to leave the dimension and return to the real world.[18][19] Emplate managed to possess the rest of the team. Brielle was going to drive a stake into his heart, but before she could, Emplate switched with her and plunged the stake into her heart. Shela was able to swap places with the members of her team and take their injuries away from. This caused her to pass out. Reed Richards took her under his care saying that she will recover with time. He also stated that Shela might have the ability not just switch with those physically close to her, but emotionally close to her as well.[20]
