Sherman Wilks was a commander in the Confederate States Army who offered a $1000 death benefit to any man who joined his regiment. After the Confederacy lost the American Civil War, Wilks became a bounty hunter in order to pay off the debt to his men's widows.[1]
With only one widow left to pay, Wilks set out to collect the bounty on the outlaw Kid Colt. After a brief truce between the two in order to fight off a gang of scavengers, Wilks challenged Colt to a duel. Wilks lost the duel but ultimately his debt was paid off as Colt and his ally Hawk pretended to be Wilks and collected the bounty, passing off a dead body as that of Kid Colt, using the money to pay Wilks's last widow.[2]
