—Rio Morales[source]Jeff and I may not have given birth to you, but that doesn't make you any less part of this family. I Can't imagine the things you've gone through, Shift. But you are beautiful. And you are loved. And more importantly -- you're a Morales.
History
Creation[]

A young Shift being exploited by the Assessor
After the Assessor captured and experimented on Miles Morales to examine his powers and skillset as Spider-Man, he created multiple clones of the young man, Shift and his brothers Selim and Mindspinner were among these clones that were shaped to be weapons as they rapidly aged. Shift himself was considered a failed clone due to his unstable form until the Assessor found a way to exploit his flaws.[6] Shift eventually escaped along with his two brothers from the Assessor while also trying to find a way to stay alive as they were not meant to last due to being clones, they kidnapped a scientist and robbed a warehouse in order to make a cure.[8]
Encountering Miles[]
While the original Miles Morales and Peter Parker were investigating who was committing crimes as Spider-Man, Shift encountered them on a rooftop and attacked them. Though he was beaten, he was rescued by his brothers who arrived on the rooftop. When Miles ignored Selim's warning, the brothers attacked Miles until they were stopped by the other Spider-Man, but Shift and his brothers eventually left the two Spiders unconscious and managed to escape.[2]

A grown up Shift encounters Spider-Man
The original Miles later entered their secret refuge and broke the cure they were making to stabilize themselves, as he wrongly believed it was a formula to make more clones. When they found out about this, Shift and his two brothers brutally beat Miles and webbed him up. Realizing his mistake, Miles tried to tell the brothers he could help, but both Selim and Mindspinner didn't believe him, though Shift had faith in his genetic template, so much so that after Selim let him alone to guard Miles while they were gone to kill his mother, Shift empathized with Miles and let him escape.[6]
When Selim kidnapped their baby sister, Billie, and took her to the Brooklyn Bridge in order to prove that he was better than Miles, Shift rescued their sister from his fellow clones. Selim attacked Shift, but he was saved by Mindspinner, who ultimately died along with Selim in an explosion. Shift and Miles then left the Brooklyn Bridge with their sister. While Miles welcomed him into the family and promised that he would find a way to stabilize his cells, Billie sneezed on Shift.[9]
Shift later ran away from Miles on their way home, probably due to his fear of meeting the rest of the Morales family. Shift went to the sewers of the Brooklyn Visions Academy and stayed there until he was found again by Miles. He later met Ganke, and after examining his body, the three realized that Shift was cured and his cells were now stable. Miles deduced that after Billie sneezed on Shift that night on the bridge, he probably never washed it off which made his body produce some cloned antibodies to fight the cold, which may have stabilized his cells.[10]
Beyond Corporation[]

Miles and Shift look for the Assessor
Shift was visited by Miles at the sewers, his brother told him that the Assessor had a company called Asset Analysis Incorporated and was experimenting with interdimensional portals. When Miles told him that he located the company on Staten Island Shift decided to tag along and help him. The two brothers managed to find the Assessor's hideout and battle their way inside.[11] Inside they encountered Quantum and the Assessor himself, who tried to torture the two brothers again.[7]
Thankfully, Shift and Miles managed to destroy the core server that controlled the Assessor with the help of Quantum, who was also a victim of the evil artificial intelligence.[12] The two brothers then found a bunch of extra-dimensional monitors inside the hideout, and when Miles decided to go find his Uncle Aaron through the Multiverse, Shift followed him. They traveled to Earth-18136, Earth-8311 and an Earth with zombies before encountering Ultimatum on the Superflow.[13]
Empire of the Spider[]

Miles and Shift arrived in a dimension where Selim reigned supreme
The two fought Ultimatum and were later sent to another parallel universe where Selim succeeded in killing Miles at the Brooklyn Bridge and created an empire at Brooklyn where he reigned supreme.[14] The two brothers soon clashed with Selim's enforcers and were later recruited to a resistance by an alternate version of their sister Billie. They met General Ganke and learned about how Selim locked Brooklyn up as a pocket reality so that no one could leave. While infiltrating the Prefecture Seven, Shift encountered the monstrous alternate version of himself called "Lord Shift".[15]
After defeating his evil self, Shift and Miles encountered an old Peter Parker imprisoned on the tower, who was being used by Selim to keep himself young. They learned from Peter that Selim was maintaining the dimensional barrier with a living battery before being confronted by Lord Mindspinner. After escaping, the resistance infiltrated Selim's palace and found that the living battery Selim was using was Aaron Davis himself.[16] They took Aaron back to the resistance hideout while the dimensional barrier created by Selim finally disappeared. Unfortunately, Selim also found the location of their base and his forces started attacking the resistance.[17] After Shift, Miles, Aaron and the resistance defeated Selim and his forces, they harnessed the residual interdimensional energy from Selim's barrier, which allowed the three to return to their universe.[18]Attributes
Powers
- Shape Alteration: Shift can expand, contract or stretch his own mass to unknown limits.[8][2] He has shown to grow multiple limbs and even change his whole appearance to that of a monster.[13]
- Superhuman Durability: Shift has shown to resist a Venom Blast from Miles Morales and multiple beatings.[8][2]
- Superhuman Strength: Thanks to his ability to alter the size of parts of his body, Shift can increase his size and mass density which also increases his strength.[8][2]
- Superhuman Reflexes: Despite of his size, Shift's reflexes are also enhanced and are currently about 20 times greater than those of an ordinary human. In combination with his spider-sense, the speed of his reflexes allows him to dodge almost any attack.[7]
- Gas Generation: Shift has been capable of secreting some type of multi-color gas that also works as spray paint.[9][14]
- Spider-Sense: Like Miles, Shift also has his own spider sense. When danger is present, Shift feels a buzzing sensation in his head as a sort of early warning system, allowing him to react accordingly.[7]
- Organic Webbing: Shift has the ability to organically produce his own silk webbing from glands within his forearms, limited by his body's health and nutrition.[19]
Abilities
Weaknesses
- Inability to Speak: Due to being a failed clone, Shift can't make proper sentences and thus cannot communicate properly.[8][6] However, currently he starts to display the ability to speak thanks to Ms. Marvel who trained him how to stretch his vocal cord although not perfect.[20]
Trivia
- Shift taking the name of Miles' grandfather, is similar to Ben Reilly taking the name of Peter's Uncle Ben.[21]
