History
The Child of the Panther[]
The Princess of Wakanda, Shuri was the only child of Queen Ramonda with King T'Chaka. Her father was tragically assassinated by the colonialist Ulysses Klaw before her birth.[4] From a very young age, the orphaned Shuri wanted to claim her position as an heiress to the throne of Wakanda by becoming the legendary hero of her people known as the Black Panther. Following King T'Chaka's demise, his brother S'Yan ascended as the interim monarch and Black Panther, constantly duelling warriors who could battle for the role he had never wished for. Queen Ramonda was contrary to the young Shuri's wishes of participating in the challenge and attempted to restrain her with no success. As Shuri broke into the arena to confront her uncle S'Yan for the mantle of the Black Panther, she witnessed another fighter defeat him and acquire the title, her older paternal half-brother, T'Challa.[5]
Shuri's first kill
Under the shadow of T'Challa, the Black Panther, the young Shuri was constantly cast out from affairs concerning Wakanda, for her family wished to keep her away from danger. Alternatively, she pursued an education in nuclear physics. When the Vibranium deposits in Wakanda seemed to be the cause of incoming disasters, Shuri remarked that the Vibranium itself could have been tampered with, but got ignored by the Black Panther. She was proven correct when Klaw invaded Wakanda alongside a legion of super-villains with secret support from leaderships from all over the globe. The research facility where Shuri was in got raided by the Radioactive Man, who murdered the miner Q'Ran in cold blood in front of Shuri,[6] forcing her to hide.[7] The villain prepared to obliterate the location with a nuclear explosion to serve Klaw's purposes. Furtively, Shuri stroke back. Finding Black Knight's Ebony Blade in the fight, she wielded it to slain her opponent. The invasion was stopped and Klaw got destroyed.[8]
The experience of killing someone proved to be difficult to Shuri, who coped by retreating to the United States for a period of time. In order to provide assistance to his sister,[9] T'Challa trained her in hand-to-hand combat. Part of his intentions included the expectation that she could take his place as Black Panther should a day come when she needed to lead Wakanda. Despite being particularly headstrong and excessively angry, the will to become the Black Panther drove Shuri to become a gifted fighter as time went by.[10]
War with Atlantis[]
Shuri, as queen of Wakanda, was involved in treaty negotiations with Namor, who offered to end the bloodshed between their two nations in exchange for refuge in Wakanda whenever he desired. This same treaty was first presented to T'Challa, who originally rejected it. Like her brother, Shuri also declined Namor's offer stating that the conflict between the two nations was no ordinary war, and that the fate of both Wakanda or Atlantis hung in the balance; in the end, one of them would face total destruction. While Namor was celebrating the fabricated peace with T'Challa, T'Challa revealed the truth, and Namor left to find Atlantis a ruin by Shuri's forces after an attack by Wakanda.[11]
Time Runs Out[]
With the incursions threatening the existence of the universe and the Earth, Namor formed a Cabal to do what the Illuminati were unable to bring themselves to do, destroy incoming colliding alternate Earths.[12] The Cabal took over Wakanda and turned it into their base of operations, razing the Golden City and slaughtering its citizens. In an attempt to disrupt the Cabal's stolen arsenal of Antimatter Injection Systems, Shuri and T'Challa found themselves cornered by Proxima Midnight of the Cabal. Shuri remained behind to confront their enemies while T'Challa teleported away, at his sister's request.[13]
As the Black Panther
Djalia[]
Shuri was defeated by the Cabal's forces and trapped within a construct of amber similar to Thane's, a construct which left her in a state of stasis known as "living death."[3] As Black Panther struggled to find a way to bring his sister's body back to life,[14] Shuri's soul made its way to the Djalia, a transcendent plane that represented Wakanda's collective memory.[15]
During her time in the Djalia, Shuri trained with and learned from a griot spirit that had taken the form of Ramonda.[16] T'Challa eventually resurrected Shuri by retrieving her soul with the help of Manifold.[3] Now imbued with wisdom and new powers, Shuri confronted Aneka, a Dora Milaje and one of the leaders of a rebellious group.[17] Shuri seemingly convinced Aneka and Ayo to stand with the Black Panther in the wake of the invasion of another rebellion led by Tetu, which marched towards the Golden City.[18]
Imperial[]
The new democratic system of Wakanda proved proved to be too unsustainable, and seeing that it just could not work, the nation returned to a constitutional monarchy. T'Challa retook the throne of not just Wakanda, but of its Intergalactic Empire.[19] Shuri joined him on Wakanda Prime to assist her brother in governing the Empire. Suddenly, they received news that the Galactic Council had sent the Council Armada to attack the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda, and quickly formed a plan to counterattack. This plan involved Shuri disguising herself as the Black Panther to act as a distraction in order to buy Wakanda's fleet time. As the battle started, the plan went according to plan, with Shuri getting captured and brought to a Spartoi ship. She was confronted by Star-Lord and Nova who explained to her that Wakanda was the main suspect for the assassination of different galactic leaders after a Wakandan attacked a Council meeting with a propelling vibranium bullet. Shuri denied Wakanda's involvement and upon examining the bullet she explained that the vibranium used to make it was an inferior artificial version made of usual materials, meaning that Wakanda was framed. Just then, the true culprits soon revealed themselves to be the Skrulls who had secretly infiltrated the other empires, including Wakanda, and began attacking the Armada from the inside, forcing the three of them to flee. Unsure of what was going on, Nova suggested to reactivate the Xandarian Worldmind as it could hold the answer to who is behind all of this. Seeing that a group of Shi'ar were about to destroy the Stargate used by the Armada to travel to Wakanda, the trio quickly rushed to Star-Lord's ship, Milano III, and managed to fly into the portal before it could be deactivated.[20]
They arrived to the ruins of Xandar where the Worldmind laid dormant. Nova was reluctant to activate it as once awakened it couldn't be deactivated, and without money to maintain its energy cores the Worldmind would perish. Shuri promised to talk with T'Challa to financially support him, but Nova wasn't convinced, until Star-Lord assured him that he would provide him with Spartax's resources. With that out of the way, Nova connected to the Worldmind and learned that the Inhumans were behind all of this.[21] Star-Lord was sceptical of this revelation at first as the Inhumans haven't been part of the cosmic stage for a long while, but Shuri believed it to be true, since their leader, Black Bolt, had been part of same conspiracy as her brother, the Illuminati, and if he were anything like her brother then he was not to be underestimated. However, upon making their way to the Galactic Hub, they found it overrun with Skrulls.[22]
They passed through the battle ships to land on the Hub, only to be met by countless Skrulls as they made their entrance. They fought their way through the zealous Skrulls, trying to reason with them to no avail. The invasion finally ended when the Hulk, Black Panther and Black Bolt defeated the Skrulls' leader, Super-Skrull, bringing peace at last. In the following week, the galactic empires decided to unify and form the Galactic Union, which came include Wakanda's empire. Shuri told T'Challa of the Inhumans' involvement but as this information threatened the Union he decided to keep it secret. Shuri respected his wishes, and returned to Nova to let him know of her brother's decision, much to his dismay. She explained that in order to maintain their empire hard choices needed to be made, and her interest laid in Wakanda and not in justice, before biding him farewell. Shuri then questioned her brother on his interest in the Union, and he told her that this all served to advance Wakanda and open their way to the wider universe.[19]Attributes
