Synopsis for "You Say You Want... Obliteration!"

Brief Summary:
The Obliterator decides to seek revenge on the Silver Surfer by killing everyone on Zenn-La. The Silver Surfer is notified of this attack by Shalla-Bal and quickly comes to his home planet's aide. The two battle to a standstill and the Surfer convinces the Obliterator that he can't destroy Zenn-La and its people. To do this would make the Surfer an Elder of the Universe and thus immortal. The Obliterator realizes that his only option for revenge is to kill the Silver Surfer, but he quickly flies away before he can attempt to do this.

Detailed Summary:
The Obliterator sulks on the planet that the Silver Surfer and Mantis abandoned him on during their past battle. However, the Contemplator appears in astral form to update him on the the status of the Elder's of the Universe's plan to destroy Galactus. He reveals that the plan has failed and they are the only two left. The Contemplator tells him to prepare for the next battle and that he'll come get him soon.

Unfortunately the Contemplator never shows up, because he is killed by Captain Reptyl. The Obliterator gets tired of waiting and decides to set off and seek revenge on the Silver Surfer.

The Silver Surfer is relaxing in space when we comes across Nova. However, before they can start their conversation, they are interrupted by a distress signal from Shalla-Bal. She asks for the Surfer's help, because the Obliterator has come to Zenn-La and begun killing everyone on the planet. He departs Nova and heads to his homeworld.

On the way there, the Surfer is attacked by a Kree armada. He attempts to lose them, but they prove difficult to evade. The Surfer is forced to confront them and destroy all their ships.

Finally reaching Zenn-La, the Silver Surfer engages the Obliterator in battle. They fight to a stand still and the Obliterator decides to instead blow up the entire planet. The Surfer convinces him that this would only make the Surfer a fellow Elder of the Universe and thus become immortal. The Obliterator realizes that only way to truly get revenge would be for the him to kill the Surfer. But the Surfer quickly flies away, leaving the Obliterator to swear revenge for another day.

Solicit Synopsis

The Obliterator is back looking for revenge! And what better way for him to get back at the Silver Surfer than by destroying his homeworld, Zenn-La!

Notes

  • The story seems to be a fill-in issue, since it doesn't completely fit within the Silver Surfer's current storyline. The Kree attack the Surfer (even though they have a truce with him), the Surfer is still thinking about Mantis (even though he's currently involved with Nova), and there is no mention of Nova kissing Firelord (even though the Surfer was furious about this last issue). It's possible that this story was originally meant for issue 11, when Rogers was the regular penciller and was either not completed on time or was bumped for unknown reasons.
  • The Obliterator is depressed from losing his last battle with the Silver Surfer. The Surfer stranded him on a random planet and destroyed all his weapons and thus his reason for existence. [1]
  • The Obliterator learns that the other Elders of the Universe failed to destroy Galactus. [2]
  • The Contemplator uses his astral form to contact the Obliterator. He planned to come find him, but never made the trip due to the fact that he was eaten by Captain Reptyl. [3]
  • The Silver Surfer is still depressed over the apparent death of Mantis. [2]
  • The Silver Surfer swore to protect Zenn-La no matter where he was in the universe. [4]
  • The Kree Empire reinstated a truce with the Silver Surfer [5] that was canceled when a Skrull impersonating the Surfer started attacking Kree outposts. [6]
