The Sisterhood of the Wasps (Spanish: Hermandad de las Avispas), founded in 1099 AD, broke from the Spider Society to serve the Great Hive and possibly the Wasp-Goddess Shathra. Devoted to conquest over balance, they cultivate Hunters through venom rites and cocoons, guided by Mages enforcing the Hive’s will. For centuries they waged a hidden war with the Spider Society, later surfacing in New York City under leaders such as the All-Mother and Delilah. Though repeatedly defeated, the Sisterhood endures as a secret cult awaiting the Hive's triumph over the Web of Life and Destiny.

History

Origin[]

The Sisterhood of the Wasps was an ancient mystical cabal founded in 1099 A.D. during the Crusades in the Kingdom of Castille in modern day Spain.[2] Originally part of a greater order sworn to protect humanity from darkness, the sect split over ideology. While the Spider Society embraced the will of the Great Weaver, the Wasps instead bent themselves to the Great Hive, a primal force that promised domination rather than balance. Their creed held that the Hive’s swarm would one day consume all other totems.[2][3] The Sisterhood's rites and hierarchy were rooted in the worship of Shathra, the Wasp-Goddess and totemic predator of the Spider-Totems. Though her presence remained hidden for centuries, their use of Hunters, venom rituals, and hive imagery reflected devotion to her greater design.[4] The Sisterhood, like their rivals, structured themselves around two roles: a Hunter, a chosen champion empowered by totemic rites, and a Mage, who guided and restrained the Hunter’s power.[3] For centuries, the Wasps and the Spider Society waged a hidden war across Europe and beyond, clashing whenever new Hunters were chosen.[5]

Conflict with the Spider Society[]

In modern times, the Spider Society's Mage Miguel Legar performed a ritual to find the next Hunter. The rite was attacked by insectoid drones of the Wasps, and the bystander Anya Corazón was mortally wounded.[2] Miguel saved her life by sharing his mystical essence, awakening her potential as the new Hunter of the Spider Society.[3] The Sisterhood's agents continued to harry Miguel and Anya, using assassins and swarms to undermine their training.[5][6] Believing their effort lost, the Wasps attempted to raise their own Hunter, but the Spider Society disrupted the rite, forcing them to wait a year.[7] The conflict escalated as Vincent, a rival Mage within WebCorps who was secretly sympathetic to the Wasps, worked to destabilize Miguel’s leadership.[8][9] Anya, struggling with her new role, was repeatedly targeted by the Sisterhood’s operatives and visions of the Hive's will.[10] Despite these pressures, she grew into her Hunter identity, resisting the Sisterhood’s attempts to break her resolve.[11] The Sisterhood attempted to prematurely awaken their Hunter using a spiritual totem.[12] The cocooned Hunter emerged, but Spider-Man and the Spider Society prevented the bonding.[13] Miguel ultimately sacrificed himself defending his allies against the Sisterhood’s assault, marking one of their most decisive modern defeats.[13]

Use of Outside Agents[]

Frustrated, the Sisterhood turned to outside operatives. They sent the assassin Amun,[14] though Anya convinced him to abandon his mission, and later employed Felix Jade, whom Anya wrongly believed had murdered her mother.[15]

Spider-Island[]

All-Mother

All-Mother

With the outbreak of the Spider-Island virus, granting ordinary New Yorkers spider-powers, the Wasps emerged from hiding to wage open war.[16] The Hunter Wasps, led by their All-Mother, targeted Anya, now known as Spider-Girl, who had regained her powers through the virus.[16] The Hand and Hobgoblin, under orders from the Kingpin, intervened to aid her.[16]

During a confrontation, the All-Mother revealed that the Sisterhood intended to purge the spider-powered populace with a venom ritual that required cutting the victims.[17] The Wasps overwhelmed their foes, forcing Spider-Girl, Hobgoblin, and Kingpin to retreat. As the virus mutated citizens into monstrous spider-creatures, Spider-Girl realized the prophecy given to her by Madame Web meant she must ally with an enemy, the All-Mother herself.[1] Together, they held off the spider-monsters long enough for other heroes to administer the cure. However, despite this brief truce, Hobgoblin slew the All-Mother, enraging Spider-Girl. With the All-Mother’s death, the Hunter Wasps’ chain of command collapsed, and the Sisterhood retreated into obscurity.[1]

Delilah's Ascension[]

In the aftermath, the Sisterhood elevated Delilah as their new Hunter. Unlike her predecessors, Delilah fused mystical training with her criminal experience, enslaving Vermin and attempting mass conversion rites in Central Park. She later staged a high-profile assault at a concert, but both plots were foiled thanks to Araña, forewarned by Madame Web.[18]
