Ships have sailed since the world began.
Read, if you dare, what Skelos wrote,
With dead hand fumbling his silken coat;
And follow the ships thru the wind-blown wrack--
Follow the ships that come not back.
History
Origins[]
Skelos was an ancient mage who wrote sorcerous scrolls[1] and (before humanity started bounding books) the Iron-Bound Book of Skelos (as did Shuma-Gorath, Vathelos and others),[2] though it has also been stated that it was Vathelos who wrote the book of Skelos.[3][4]
Other sources argue the exact nature of Skelos (including whether or not it is a person) remains unknown.[5]
Death[]
Skelos eventually died in unrevealed circumstances.
After his death, he was buried in what became known as the Well of Skelos, allegedly guarded by demons, and by a "toad-thing", and located on the Isle of Hidden Gold,[1] possibly the Isle of Skelos.[6]
Hyborian Age[]
The Well of Skelos became known in Hyborian, Stygian and Black Coast lore.[1]
The Isle of Skelos was an island of dark and impenetrable jungles where grew Hellnail Trees.[7] Its relation to Skelos himself is unknown.
Skelos' name was invoked by dying people[8] and in incantations.[9]Notes
- Skelos was created by Robert E. Howard in his Conan stories "Black Colossus", "The Devil in Iron", and "People of the Black Circle" (and presumably others).[5]
