History
The horse that became known as Smokey was born and bred on a ranch near Last Chance, Texas during the days of the American Frontier, until he and the rest of the horses in the region were stolen by a masked outlaw named White-Face. When the original Rawhide Kid and his sidekick Randy Clayton came to town looking for a new horse for Randy after his last horse broke its leg and had to be put down, they learned about White-Face's theft and became temporary lawmen of Last Chance. During this brief period they eliminated White-Face and apprehended his gang, freeing the stolen horses. Not long after, Randy purchased Smokey and the pair rode together alongside the Rawhide Kid and his horse Apache helping those in need across the west.[1]
After riding with the boy for some time, Smokey was spooked during a cougar attack and was no longer fit for riding. Much to Randy's dismay, Smokey was put to pasture on a ranch owned by a friend of the Rawhide Kid. Presumably, Smokey remained there until he died. Randy since replaced Smokey with a new horse named King.[2]
