The Southern Desert was an arid patch of lands spanning from southern Kush, across outer Stygia, Shem, the Kothian uplands, and Zamora.

From south to north, the Southern Desert was comprised of the following regions, comprising various cities:

• The Southern Desert of Kush, and the cities of Tombalku (center of the past Aphaki "empire") and Xuthal, home of Thog the Ancient;
• The Southern Desert of Stygia, and the city of Gazal, built by the Gazali, formerly from southern Koth circa 10,900 BC;
• The Southern Desert of Shem;
• Shan-e-Sorkh, the Red Waste, and Akhlat the Accursed, dwelling of a gorgon;
• The Southern Desert of Zamora, and the city of Hanghara, home of "Sodatha."
