Synopsis for "The Planet of Madness!"

During a meeting of the Galaxy Council, Mer-King, leader of the two-headed Mercurians tells the council that his people are going mad. He explains that his people have two heads, one is a dormant evil side and the conscious good side, but when the temperature rises it boils their mercury blood making the evil side wake up. Not knowing the cause of the sudden anarchy exploding on his world, Mer-King asks for the council's help to solve the problem. While Edgar Revere tries to convince the council that they should go to war, his father Galaxy Chief Blast Revere decides instead to send the Space Squadron to find a solution to the problem. This angers Edgar, but he sees this as an ideal opportunity to discredit or get rid of his rival Jet Dixon and further convince the council to go to war.

Jet along with his allies Max, Rusty, LLA 38 and Squad 3 (a team of scientists) blast off in the Solar 1 and a science ship in order to investigate what is causing the Mercurians to turn evil. Meanwhile, Edgar continues to try to convince the council to go to war, but his father tells Edgar that they will not come to a decision until they have heard back from Jet on the situation and any possible solutions.

While in space, as the Solar 1 approaches Mercury, Mer-Duo a Mercurian envoy sent along with the Space Squadron, suddenly goes berserk and attacks Rusty. The fight sends them out of the ship just as they are entering Mercury's atmosphere, however the planets low gravity allows Rusty to subdue his attacker and land safely just as the ships land. While Jet leads most of the Space Squadron to stop the attacking Mercurians, LLA 38 is left with Squad 3 to determine the cause of their madness and find a way to stop it. LLA and the other scientists determine that the Sun has been drawn closer to Mercury increasing the planet's temperature enough to effect change in the Mercurians.

Back on Earth, as the council continues to debate, Edgar destroys the radio antenna on top of the Galaxy building and continues to try and convince the council to go war, knowing that Jet will not be able to contact them. However despite his efforts, Edgar's plan fails, as at that moment LLA and his crew build a magnetic device that pushes the Sun back into its original orbit restoring the Mercurians back to normal. The Space Squadron then returns to Earth and declairs their mission a success, putting a stop to any plans to go to war.

LLA 38 has created the Disasto-Ray, a monitoring device that can alert Space Squadron of any dangers in the solar system. When the device is activated it shows them a volcano erupting but does not disclose the location. Jet mobilizes the Space Squadron to find the source but comes up empty handed. When he reports to Blast Revere, Blast's son Edgar takes this moment to try discredit Jet. Blast is forced to tell Jet to find results or face disciplinary action.

However, LLA discovers where the disaster is happening: In the Dead Sea on Neptune. The Space Squadron then blasts off to investigate. They are brought to the Dead Sea by the Fish Men of Saturn and are shocked when the long though extinct Octopus-Men rise out of the volcano to attack their foes the Fish-Men. While on Earth, Edgar monitors the battle on the Disasto-Ray and knowing that the Space Squadron faces long odds attempts to sabotage the machine to stop anyone from assisting them.

He is caught by Dawn, but quickly makes an excuse and covers his tracks. She then sends an order to the people of Neptune to activate their pumps and drain the Dead Sea. This gives the Space Squadron the edge they need to defeat the Octopus-Men. When Jet and his crew return home, Dawn tells him how her brother helped save his life, but Jet finds this suspicious.
