Imhotep's Spear and Shield are symbolic items that he passed down to his secret brotherhood. The brotherhood was split: the Spear went to the East with the Brotherhood of the Spear while the Shield went to the West with the Brotherhood of the Shield.[1][2]

This spear was used by Imhotep to defend Egypt from a Brood invasion in 2620 BC. On the surface, it appeared to be an ordinary spear made of wood and metal, but it was said to be powered by belief. Through the ages, while the Shield of Imhotep was kept by the Brotherhood of the Shield in the West as a symbol of their order, the Spear was kept in the East with the Brotherhood of the Spear.[1]

The Spear was held by Zhang Heng of ancient China.[1]

15th Century[]

The Spear's image was featured on Imhotep's statue under Leonardo da Vinci's observatory workshop.[3]

20th Century[]

The Spear eventually fell into the hands of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.[4] It was from them (plus the Hand) that the modern incarnation of Hydra was formed.[5] Supreme Hydra Ryuji Hiraoka wielded the Spear before being usurped by Baron Strucker.[6]

In circa 1961, the Spear was wielded by Hydra leader Baron Strucker to stab Leviathan leader Orion. After Magadan pulled the spear out, he was attacked by Hand ninjas of Grandmaster Shoji Soma, who was collaborating with Strucker. The spear's subsequent fate is unknown.[7]

21st Century[]

The Spear of Imhotep inspired China to create S.P.E.A.R., led by Xian Zheng.[8]

Trivia

  • The High Council of Hydra still identifies as the Spear,[10] despite losing the name and symbol and straying very far from Imhotep's original ideals.
    • Nick Fury's files state that the "All references to the ancient organization of HYDRA [the Spear] cease to appear after the Renaissance,"[5] suggesting the transition was finalized somewhere in this time.
