Quote1 The Shield in the West, the Spear in the East... The greater brotherhood, always divided. Quote2
Narrator[src]

Imhotep's Spear and Shield are symbolic items that he passed down to his secret brotherhood. The brotherhood was split: the Spear went to the East with the Brotherhood of the Spear while the Shield went to the West with the Brotherhood of the Shield.[1][2]

History

Brotherhood of the Shield (Earth-616) from S.H.I.E.L.D

Imhotep's Spear & Shield

This spear was used by Imhotep to defend the Earth from a Brood invasion. The spear possesses durability to survive the bodily fluids of the Brood Queen and the passage of 5,000 years. The spear also possesses a sharp edginess to cut through the Brood's physique. Through the ages, while the Shield of Imhotep was kept by the Brotherhood of the Shield in the West as a symbol of their order, the Spear of Imhotep was kept in the East, though the Brotherhood of the Spear eventually lost its symbol.[1]

The Spear was then acquired by Hydra leader Baron Strucker in the 1960s, who used it to stab Leviathan leader Viktor Uvarov. The spear was seemingly left behind,[5] and its subsequent fate is unknown.

21st Century[]

The Spear of Imhotep inspired China of the East to create S.P.E.A.R., led by Xian Zheng.[6]

Alternate Reality Versions

Earth-61311[]

Sir Isaac Newton birthed Hydra from the Spear.[7]

Trivia

  • The High Council of Hydra still identifies as the Spear,[8] despite losing the name and symbol and straying very far from Imhotep's original ideals.
    • Nick Fury's files state that the "All references to the ancient organization of HYDRA [the Spear] cease to appear after the Renaissance,"[9] suggesting the transition was finalized somewhere in this time.
  • On its own, the Spear of Imhotep is a mundane ornamental spear made from wood and metal, but it is said to be powered by belief.[1]
