Spectacles was a counterfeiter who was active during the 1940s. In 1947 he devised a scheme to defraud the Roland Gallery of a large sum of money selling counterfeit coins. To this end, he kidnapped world renown silversmith Enrico Laredo and began stealing silver cups that were made of Britannia metal in order to force Enrico to fashion counterfeits of silver dollars that were used in the 1804 Louisiana Purchase.[1]

However, his thefts of various silver cups attracted the attention of the Sub-Mariner and his cousin Namora who failed to stop Spectacles and his men from stealing a cup at a speed boat competition. They were just as unsuccessful when Namora won a swimming trophy which was also stolen. The pair finally deduced Spectacles' plan when they learned of Laredo's kidnapping and the sale of the silver dollars. They confronted Spectacles at the Roland Gallery, and he fled leaving his phony coins behind. Examining the coins, Namora found that Laredo had sketched the address where he was being held in the coins and they used that information to capture Spectacles and his gang.[2]

Spectacles subsequent fate is unknown.
