The early history of Sphinxor is unknown. What is known is that he was contacted by the Beyonders and hired to move the planet known as Counter-Earth. Sphinxor set about learning about the world he was to move and did so by monitoring television sitcoms. He also learned about the High Evolutionary and Adam Warlock. Because they were very powerful beings who could interfere with his job, Sphinxor looked for other ways to deal with them.
When Warlock was crucified, Sphinxor tampered with his Soul Gem, which released its vampiric hunger for souls. However, that did not get Warlock permanently out of the way, and when he returned, Sphinxor again manipulated the Soul Gem. This time, he made Adam Warlock think that he had grown incredibly large, causing him to leave Counter-Earth because he was too immense to interact with it. Again, the illusion didn't last. On Warlock's third return, Sphinxor created the illusion that Counter-Earth had been destroyed. This caused Warlock to blame the High Evolutionary leading to both of them leaving. Finally, Sphinxor and his Prime Movers were able to begin moving Counter-Earth.
At some point after Warlock had first left Counter-Earth, Sphinox was asked by someone he called "Uncle Stan" to fill certain unspecified "kids" in on who Warlock was.
Unfortunately for Sphinxor, the being known as Her sought out Adam Warlock, supposedly buried on Counter-Earth. When she discovered the planet gone, she got the aid of the High Evolutionary to track its path, leading them, as well as the Thing, Moondragon, Alicia Masters, and Starhawk who accompanied her on her search for Warlock, to the Prime Movers. Realizing fighting the group would bring no benefited, he convinced the High Evolutionary to allow him to complete the transport of the planet where he could question the Beyonders about their plans.
