Synopsis for "Marked for Death: Part 2 of 6: Every Hand Against Her"

In the immediate aftermath of the Web Site being destroyed by a bomb last issue, Spider-Girl and Normie evaluate the situation, and Spider-Girl realizes that if the bomb were set by the same entity her spider-sense has warned has been spying on her at school, then her secret identity - and her loved ones - are in danger. Spider-Girl rushes home, and gets another spider-sense flash and tries to change up her route to avoid being followed, and see if she can find her pursuer. But they mysteriously vanish. She's on the verge of deducing who might be following her, but the buzzing of her mobile phone startles her.

It is Davida Kirby, and Spider-Girl has to speak carefully about where she has been. Davida is upset about Nancy Lu (a recently outed mutant) having 'betrayed' her and 'stolen' her spot on the basketball team. Spider-Girl has to confess she is too distracted to deal with this now as she continues swinging home, earning Davida's ire.

At the Web Site, now attended by firefighters, Normie and the Green Goblin (Phil Urich) confer, and speculate whether the still-missing Darkdevil has anything to do with the bombing. They do not see the mysterious figure in a trenchcoat monitoring the scene from a nearby rooftop.

Peter Parker is home when May returns. She sits at the kitchen table to tells him everything that has transpired. Peter, for his part, focuses on the fact that May has been getting chummy with his mortal enemy's grandson at a secret 'Bat Cave', while May urges him to keep his focus on the likelihood that Mr. Nobody may not be in prison as he should be. His teleportation powers fit the profile of whatever her spider-sense has been warning her about. Shortly after, Peter confirms with a phone call to a colleague at Ryker's Prison that Mr. Nobody is supposedly in solitary confinement. May still has her doubts. Peter suggests maybe Darkdevil - who is also a teleporter - could be her stalker, but May discloses that her spider-sense is more sensitive than Peter's was, and it can distinguish one presence from another. She knows by feel that Darkdevil is not the one who has been setting her spider-sense off. Peter assures May that he does not feel the family is in danger.

May is sent to school the next day. She is wary, watchful for her stalker. She encounters an angry Davida who notes that May has been distant for a while, as if something changed for her in the last year... But spider-sense cuts through the conversation, distracting May and proving Davida's point. Davida leaves, feeling like her friendship with May has changed, and not for the better.

Normie tries to visit Brenda Drago (Raptor) at Ryker's Prison, but is told - not for the first time - that she is unavailble to visitors today. With a call to Nelson and Associates, Normie hopes to reach Brenda's lawyer Reilly Tyne, not realizing he is Darkdevil. Reception tries to redirect Normie to another lawyer who is covering for Tyne while he is 'missing,' but Normie hangs up. Up above within the prison complex, two figures - one middle-aged man, and another shadowy figure in a trench coat, discuss Normie and Spider-Girl as persistent individuals - but their 'plans' cannot be interfered with. The middle-aged man leaves handling Spider-Girl up to the shadowy figure.

May keeps worrying about Darkdevil at school, while trying to juggle the rift between her friends Nancy and Davida, which only grows more awkward when Davida storms off after seeing Nancy and May innocently chatting.

That evening, Spider-Girl meets on a rooftop with Canis and, not getting any clarity from him about the bombings or Darkdevil's whereabouts, dangles him over the ledge. This gets May the intel that a South American gangster is trying to move in on the late Kingpin's territory, and might be the one behind the bombings. Spider-Girl just can't understand why she and Darkdevil have become targets.

An explosion at an art gallery that was a Kingpin front draws Spider-Girl into action against Quickwire and Big Man - two super criminals. Quickwire should be in jail, while Spider-Girl thought that Big Man had renounced his criminal ways. They are on some kind of mission, but so is Spider-Girl: she fights through them to get to Mr. Zodoro, Kingpin's agent who, though unconscious, is alive for her to rescue. Matters are complicated when Raptor turns up and attacks Spider-Girl, using knock-out gas to put Spider-Girl down.

The villains encircle the unconscious Spider-Girl and retrieve Zodoro. Quickwire hopes to get a few kicks in while Spider-Girl is down, but Raptor forbids it; she gets backup from a mysterious person in a trenchcoat seen only in silhouette, who orders them to take Zodoro and return to base. They leave Spider-Girl there without dealing her any further harm. When she wakes up, Spider-Girl is left with a lot more questions: why is Raptor helping criminals? And why didn't they kill her when they had the chance?

Spider-Girl checks in at home, then decides she needs to tell Normie that Brenda, his girlfriend, has gone bad again. Elsewhere, Normie's phone rings, but a shadowy figure in a trenchcoat interrupts him. Although the assailant's face is not shown, Normie recognizes who they are before the figure shoots Normie, and leaves him for dead on the sidewalk. The figure bids Normie greet his grandfather for him: "I was always a big fan of his work."

Trivia

  • Marks the last time the Web Site is seen.
  • The reader is left uncertain about Spider-Girl's stalker, but it will turn out to be a mix of three people: (1) Kaine, who is acting on orders from Weadon and actually trying to keep Spider-Girl safe; (2) Mr. Nobody, who is performing the bombings and assassinations on behalf of Canis; and (3) Howard Kavanagh, who stalks May at school to confront her about what she said to his girlfriend about his physical abuse. Because May did not realize this, she incorrectly believes in this issue that the bomber has learned her secret identity.
