Synopsis for "Marked for Death: Part 3 of 6: If This Be My Destiny!"

In a hospital waiting room, the Parker family consoles Franklin Nelson about the shooting of Normie Osborn, his stepson, as Normie fights for his life in surgery. For all May Parker knows, Normie - someone she describes as one of her closest friends - may already be dead. Nelson laments that Normie got caught up in the 'costumed craziness.'

Undergoing surgery, Normie's mind dreams up an encounter with his grandfather Norman in a graveyard, them both dressed in their Green Goblin costumes. Norman chastises Normie for having not only failed to kill Spider-Girl, but for having fallen in love with her. With an electrocardiogram (ECG) image, it's clear that Normie's metaphysical battle with Norman's legacy is having an impact on his real-world survival.

In the waiting room, Mary Jane gives her blessing for May to suit up as Spider-Girl and find Normie's attacker. Bursting onto the rooftop of the hospital in costume, Spider-Girl crosses paths with Kaine, dressed in a trenchcoat, much like the shadowy figure(s?) seen in the previous issue. Kaine seems surprised to see her there. May thinks on Kaine was supposedly reforming, but she feels she cannot count on anything.

Back inside, Peter realizes May has gone; MJ subtly tells him he knows why. Then, Captain Ruiz from the NYPD arrives, flanked with uniformed officers. But she is not there for Normie: apparently, Wilson Fisk has taken a turn for the worse after being the target of a bombing, and even as he undergoes surgery, his prognosis is poor.

Alike to what Normie is experiencing as he is under the knife, Fisk's metaphysical battle has him talking to a shadowy figure and experiencing key events in his early life on the streets of Hell's Kitchen. As he is chastised by the figure for his egotism and violence, the figure steps forward from the shadows bearing the face of Fisk's dead son, Richard. In the real world, Fisk's ECG becomes erratic.

Spider-Girl manhandles Kaine and demands answers. Kaine says he is present because of Kingpin, not Normie, and disclaims having anything to do with Normie's shooting. Kaine tries to warn Spider-Girl not to get involved with the brewing gang conflict, but a hail of bullets puts them both on the evasive. Mr. Nobody arrives, dressed in a similar trenchcoat, and claims he is there as an ally to Spider-Girl against Kaine. Mr. Nobody claims he was sent on a mission to stop Kaine from assassinating Kingpin, and prevent Kaine's gang from forming ties with known international criminals. Kaine insists Mr. Nobody is lying. Spider-Girl agrees that somebody is lying, but is not sure who.

In the dreamscape, Normie is assaulted by Norman and accosted for his failures to keep up the Parker-Osborn feud. Harry Osborn, also dressed in Green Goblin garb, appears, and intercedes to keep Norman away from Normie, but Normie declares he can stand up for himself.

Spider-Girl flies right through on an attempt to punch the teleporting Mr. Nobody, who claims he has been trying to protect Spider-Girl for the last several days from Kaine's 'hit squad.' When Mr. Nobody momentarily disappears from the battle, Kaine admits there are some half-truths to what Mr. Nobody is saying, but he is only trying to confuse Spider-Girl. Spider-Girl still does not trust Kaine. Mr. Nobody returns with two pistols, one pointed at each of the other two present, and still makes a play to seem like he is on Spider-Girl's side.

Wilson Fisk faces his son, but glibly expresses disappointment that near-death has not offered up a greater revelation. He is being showed scenes of his life, yet he does not repent, but is proud of his ascent to the top. It is an apparition of Fisk's late wife Vanessa that at last humbles Wilson, and wonders aloud if he truly can change and renounce his ways. SHe offers her hand to him, and he closes his eyes, and hangs his head.

Mr. Nobody lets out a volley of pistol fire. Spider-Girl has to decide whom to trust. She tries to elicit information about the nature of his 'gang' and whether Raptor and Quickwire are members of it, while Mr. Nobody continues to insist he just wants to take Kaine, a known murderer and criminal collaborator, off the board.

Normie and Harry are both being clobbered by the spirit of Norman, but in a similar fashion to Fisk's near-death vision, Liz Allen's apparition turns up to shine a light on Norman and send him scurrying away. Liz embraces Normie and tells him his destiny is his - does he choose the security of the grave, or the uncertainty of life?

A surgeon frantically tries to stabilize a patient's heart. It is not clear which patient.

On the rooftop, Spider-Girl webs Kaine, exposing him to Mr. Nobody. As Mr. Nobody prepares a kill shot, Spider-Girl tackles him. Kaine escapes, and Mr. Nobody tells Spider-Girl that he can prove Kaine murdered Darkdevil - but Spider-Girl has interfered, and more will die because of her. As Mr. Nobody teleports away, Spider-Girl fears she has made a critical error.

In the hospital, one of the patients in surgery flatlines. Time of death, 6:47 PM.

Trivia

  • The issue leaves two major details uncertain: (1) Which of the patients died at the end, and (2) did Wilson Fisk repent. The former gets an answer in a later issue, but the latter is up to readers' interpretations.
  • Marks the death of Wilson Fisk in the MC2, but his legacy and the vacuum he leaves behind will continue to trouble Spider-Girl into Amazing Spider-Girl.
