Synopsis for "Eye of the Beholder"

Spider-Girl has been failing to locate Doctor Octopus for sevearl nights, but as the story begins, she is helping J2. J2 is clearing a gridlocked street of cars because of demons. Spider-Girl is dubious because she cannot see anything, but a sting from her spider-sense alerts her to invisible danger. She trusts her instincts, and manages to counter something. After successfully fighting the invisible something off, it seems to flee. J2 is surprised she cannot see them, but neither can a large number of civilians who are upset by the destruction J2 has - to their view - needlessly caused on the street. J2 heads off to Midtown High, asking Spider-Girl if she knows where that is.

At the Buzz's nondescript van, JJ Jameson shows his tech guy Richie a spider-tracer he found in his laundry - he knows Spider-Girl has been tracking him, and he doesn't like it. Richie reminds him that Spider-Girl did help rescue JJ's dad recently. In typical JJ fashion, he doubles down on Spider-Girl being, "out of control." Richie inspects the tracer, and thinks he might be able to track it back to Spider-Girl. JJ is excited at the prospect of getting to discover Spider-Girl's secret identity.

Mayday Parker chats on the phone with friend and Avenger, Stinger. She hopes Stinger can help her and J2 figure out why they couldn't see the 'demons.' Stinger will help, but she lets Spider-Girl know that Mainframe and the Avengers insurer is not happy.

Within Midtown High, May encounters Jimmy Yama, who introduces her to his cousin Zane (secret identity of J2). They are heading to the Spider Shoppe, a new store that deals in Spider-Girl memoribilia, and try to ask May, but Brad Miller turns up and throws cold water on the idea that May is into geek stuff, and that she'd rather go with him for coffee. May readily takes up Jimmy's offer, still cold to him because of his prejudice toward mutants expressed several issues previous.

Richie drives the Buzz van while they get a lead on Spider-Girl's whereabouts. Richie finds JJ's fixation with exposing Spider-Girl obsessive. JJ admits that he is jealous of how Spider-Girl gets adored, while Buzz gets 'hate', and he also thinks she's a know-it-all. The spider tracer leads them to Midtown South Precinct, and JJ wonders if that means Spider-Girl is a cop.

Inside the precinct, Peter Parker, a police crime scene investigator, is asked by Lieutenant Haberstein if he knows about the J2 and Spider-Girl incident from the beginning of the issue.

At the Spider Shoppe, Zane is astonished at the merchandise, and wishes that there was a store like it for J2. Jimmy says he's a fan of Thunderstrike. Zane has to leave abruptly, Jimmy decides to browse the lunchboxes, and May takes a look at some of the backpacks. She gets a call to her Spider-Girl phone from J2, who wants to meet up - he thinks he has a lead that can help them with the invisible foes.

J2 takes Spider-Girl to a comic store, the Deacon's Den, where they are directed by the proprietor to a back door, where they are expected. They meet Doc Magus, the current Sorcerer Supreme. After some casual chat, Doc Magus offers to help with the invisible demons. On a rooftop, he uses his magic to detect paranormal activity. He surmizes that J2's armor protected him against the demons' illusion spell; if not for that, no one would have been aware that they were there. Magus astral projects and starts searching the neighborhood for a dimensional rift.

In her narration, Spider-Girl is doubtful about all the magic talk. But as she gets swinging around the neighborhood, her spider-sense goes off, leading her to an invisible wall that her arm disappears into. She brings J2 and Magus to it, and they discover the dimensional rift is home to a nightmare dimension run by Nemesus. Spider-Girl can't see Nemesus or his minions, but her spider-sense alerts her to their presence. She tries to fight what she cannot see, aided by J2 and Magus, who can.

In battle, Spider-Girl finds the different gravity in the alternate dimension is something she can use to her advantage. J2 helps keep darklings off of her back, accidentally sliming Spider-Girl in the process.

Outside the Midtown South precinct, JJ and Richie scope police officers leaving the building, and set their sights on Lieutenant Haberstein as a likely candidate. Haberstein is with Peter Parker as they discuss the J2 and Spider-Girl incident, and Peter gets a spider-sense warning about them. Richie is doubtful that they have the right person, but JJ feels it all adds up if Spider-Girl is a police officer.

In the nightmare dimension, reinforcements are coming in. J2 uses Spider-Girl for a fastball special to hit Nemesus's machine. She pads her arm with web and smashes through the machine. With it down, now Spider-Girl can see the darklings and Nemesus. Doc Magus decides it's time for the heroes to leave. As a parting shot, Doc Magus turns the invisibility magicks against Nemesus and his minions, and then closes up the rift after the heroes return home. An angry civilian who berated J2 and Spider-Girl at the beginning of the issue comes out to tell them to leave before he calls the cops.

May returns home and is confronted by her father, who demands an explanation about the property damage people are saying she and J2 did. She grins, having just been thinking about how home was a refuge from all the criticism.
