Synopsis for "Life and Death Choices"
The issue opens with Wolverine and Peter Parker in a bar, dealing with the emotional fallout from their battle with Dreadshadow and the revelations about Teresa Parker. Peter is troubled by the news that Teresa is not his biological sister, viewing her as the last connection to his parents. He is also grappling with the guilt instilled by Dreadshadow's argument that heroes are not responsible enough to make life-and-death choices.
Their conversation is cut short when Peter's spider-sense alerts him to a disturbance nearby. A police barricade has been set up around a subway construction site where a "wild animal" has reportedly gotten loose and attacked workers. Feeling responsible, Peter suits up as Spider-Man to investigate, despite Wolverine's reluctance.
Descending into the tunnels, Spider-Man discovers a horde of crazed creatures he identifies as clones of the villain Vermin. They are far more aggressive than usual, and he is quickly overwhelmed. Wolverine arrives to assist him, and his enhanced senses detect powerful pheromones driving the Vermin into a frenzy and simultaneously triggering his own berserker rage.
They track the source of the pheromones to an abandoned subway car in a sealed-off section of the old Morlock tunnels. Inside, they find a dying Morlock named Varys, whose mutation is uncontrollably releasing the pheromones. Varys explains he came back to retrieve a photo of his late wife for his daughter but was mortally wounded.
With the Vermin horde breaking through the tunnel wall Wolverine collapsed to buy them time, they face a dilemma. Varys is too injured to be moved, but as long as he is alive, his pheromones will drive the Vermin to attack and endanger more lives. In a moment that directly confronts Peter with the "life-and-death choice" he was struggling with, Varys asks Wolverine to kill him, preferring to die rather than have more deaths on his conscience. Wolverine orders Spider-Man to go outside and hold off the horde while he "deals with" the situation.
Spider-Man fights valiantly but runs out of web-fluid and is about to be overrun when the Vermin suddenly become docile. Wolverine emerges from the subway car, and it's understood that he has mercy-killed Varys to stop the threat. The issue concludes with the two heroes standing over the now-calm Vermin, with Wolverine asking Peter if he is "good with" the fact that their job sometimes requires making these hard decisions. Peter's silent sigh indicates his continued moral struggle with the heavy burden of being a hero.
