Synopsis for "Year One: Part Two"

Scientist Otto Octavius works with radioactive isotopes in a lab experiement to show off to his patrons in the government, but the nuclear reaction overheats and the experiment is shut down. Octavius is talked to by a counselor who was sent to evaluate Octavius after his erratic and anti-social behavior involving his coworkers and the lab experiments. Otto screams at the counselor, who he believes is beneath him, but eventually takes the counselor's advice and lies that he is simply "overworked" and takes a short break so that he can keep his job.

Otto spends time with his mother at dinner and his mother reiterates how jealous of his time she is and that Otto is the only one she has left. Otto is fascinated when the new character Spider-Man is shown being interviewed on the television, and Otto is especially fascinated with Spider-Man's Web-Shooters as mechanical implements to enhance his human abilities. Otto becomes inspired and eventually raises the money to develop his own mechanical implements, a set of mechanical arms, to help him handle radioactive elements from a distance. One evening, two of Otto's coworkers walk in on Otto while he is trying to use mental thoughts to control on his arms for the first time. The coworkers' interruption breaks Otto's concentration and cause him to be hurt by mechanical arms, which in turn causes Otto to lash out in anger. Instead of leaving as Otto commanded, his coworker Mary Alice Anders stays behind and helps Otto, showing kindness in response to his aloofness. Thw two continue talking, and while standing behind an X-Ray board, Otto gropes Mary Alice's breasts. Otto is shocked by his behaviour and immediately runs out of the room.

Otto goes home and paints a picture of Mary Alice, but his mother walks in and becomes enraged at seeing the picture. She hits and berates Otto, shaming him for touching the girl and accusing him of leaving his mother for her. Otto becomes very confused and frustrated and tears his painting up. Some time later, Otto calls Mary Alice into his office at work and harshly tells her that he has transferred her away to a department that is not his own, accusing her of being able to exploit her seducing on other men in the new department.

Otto comes home to his mother's house later, drunk after being forced to celebrate with his coworkers for finishing his experiement. Dripping wet with rain, Otto yells across the house how he let no one stop him as she told him to, including Mary Alice. Otto is surprised and enraged when he hears his mother come into the house downstairs after him, escorted by another man whom she lets leave so that Otto won't see him. The drunken Otto attacks his mother when she comes upstairs, and the scene ends.

Later, Otto is shown controlling his mechanical arms to show off a radioactive experiement. He is surprised when the reaction overheats and explodes.
