Synopsis for "Year One: Part Five (Destiny)"

Doctor Octopus stands outside a nuclear powerplant in New York City, passing out Spider-Tracers (a miniature tracking device created by Spider-Man and secretly copied by Doctor Octopus) disguised as environmentalist button pins to a large crowd of protesters rallying outside the powerplant. Doctor Octopus then breaks into the control room of the powerplant where he dispatches the engineers and then goes to the nuclear core of the plant and stares into it. He is shocked at what he finds.

Spider-Man is attracted to the powerplant by "Spider-sense" ability reacting to some of the Spider-Tracers in Doctor Octopus' control. Spider-Man confronts Doctor Octopus, and when the two battle into the crowd of protestors, Otto activates all of the Spider-Tracers disguised as button pins at once. Spider-Man's brain is overwhelmed with sensory overload, and as he lashes out at the people around him, Otto grabs Spider-Man with his mechanical arms and hold him at length. The tortured Spider-Man, knowing that Otto's arms can feel radiation, touches two of them together to "close the circuit", causing Otto to be zapped by radiation flowing through them. Spider-Man gets atop a now-weak Doctor Octopus whose arms have become useless, and instead of punching the Doctor, Spider-Man destroys the control box activating all of the Spider-Tracers. Doctor Octopus is taken into custody by the military and he reveals to everyone that he feels "truly alone" after finding that the radioactive core inside the powerplant was well taken care of and that radiation, which he had seen as his god, wants nothing but to have purpose and to "be exploited in its perfection."

Doctor Octopus is shown in his prison cell later, writing letters to his deceased mother, and reflecting on his newly found obsession with Spider-Man.
