History
At the beginning of time, the abyssal elder god Knull discovered how to create life out of darkness. Experimenting to hone his powers, Knull created an artificial planet to serve as his throneworld and established himself as the nexus of a hive consisting of Symbiotes, symbiote-dragons, and other predatory and parasitic entities formed of living abyss.[2] To amplify his connection to the Hive-Mind, Knull created the first Spire in the shape of a throne of living abyss,[3] from which he oversaw his horde of monsters in their rampage across the cosmos. Knull's original Spire was presumably destroyed after the Symbiote Hive rebelled against him, leaving him imprisoned in the core of the Symbiote Throneworld, which they renamed Klyntar.[2]
After becoming Knull's acolyte, Cletus Kasady used the Dark Carnage symbiote to create two Spires - one in San Francisco's Underground City and one in an abandoned subway station under Grand Street in Manhattan.[4][5] Kasady used the Spires to commune with Knull and direct his offshoot of the Symbiote Hive during his attempt to slaughter the Earth.[6] However, the Underground City's Spire was destroyed by Hawkeye, somewhat weakening Dark Carnage's control of his offshoots.[7]
After Dark Carnage's defeat, the Spire under Grand Street was left abandoned until Venom used it in an unsuccessful attempt to hack into the Symbiote Hive-Mind during Knull's attack on Earth.[8] Knull established a Spire of his own atop the Empire State Building, using it to oversee his assault on Earth.[9][10][11]
After becoming the new King in Black, Eddie relocated Knull's Spire to the basement of his new house, using it to oversee the Symbiote Hive. However, interfacing with the Spire placed an extreme amount of strain on Eddie's body and caused him to rapidly age over the course of only a few months.[12]Alternate Reality Versions
