Sprite[src]

Sprite is a member of the Eternals,[7] a race of people genetically altered from humans to be superior in all physical traits.[8] Unlike most Eternals, Sprite is also forever young, having the body of a child. Sprite is the most mischevious of the Eternals, and often will get up to no good when she is bored.[4][9]

Sprite, who at the time was male, created great mistrust between himself and the rest of his kind when he erased the memories of all the other Eternals in an attempt to grant himself the ability to grow up.[4] Eventually, however, his plan was thwarted and he was executed for his misdeeds.[10] When he was reborn, he changed sexes (a common feature among Eternals) and was imprisoned in the location known as the Exclusion without memories of her transgressions. With time, she was deemed fit to rejoin Eternal society and was put under the care of her long-time friend Ikaris, who was to make sure she stayed in line.[9][11]

History

Sprite, like every Eternal, was created by the Celestials one million years ago and has looked after humanity ever since.[12][9]

Sprite inspired Peter Pan

Unlike the more stoic and noble members of the Eternals, however, Sprite is considered a trickster, often taunting his fellow Eternals with his illusions.[7]

Across the Ages

He pranked humans for centuries under various guises, including "Puck," inspiring Shakespeare's character of the same name,[13]

In 1901, J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" was inspired by Sprite, who appeared levitating in front of him in Hyde Park, London.[4]

In 1906, during the San Francisco Earthquake, the Dreaming Celestial's chamber was damaged. The Eternals arrived and formed Uni-Mind to fix it, making Sprite realize that he could use the Celestials powers to change his Eternal life and allow him to finally grow up.[4]

Modern Age

When the Fourth Host of Celestials arrived, Sprite stayed behind when his fellows formed the Uni-Mind to commune with the host. Spotting an atomic Deviant vessel speeding for the Celestial ship, Sprite chose to act by releasing the Forgotten One from his centuries of confinement to confront them.[14] After the Forgotten One returned, the Prime Eternal Zuras punished the duo by making each responsible for each other.[15]

Years later, with his plan to grow already under way, Sprite tapped into the power of the Dreaming Celestial and wiped the memories of his fellow Eternals to give them new lives as human beings, a change that would also have enabled him to finally be allowed to grow up. Sprite pretended to be a child actor named Colin in a show called That's So Sprite.[4] After his plan was thwarted, Sprite was murdered by Zuras for what he had done to his fellow Eternals.[10]

After the mass suicidal event that led to the Eternals' demise,[16] they were all reborn due to their immortal nature. Sprite was resurrected as a female and, due to her crimes, she was imprisoned in the Exclusion, having been restored to her last safe backup. As a result, Sprite no longer remembered the last few hundred years of her life.[9]

By the time Ikaris was resurrected, the other Eternals had decided that Sprite was to be freed and Zuras appointed Ikaris to look after the trickster. Once freed, Sprite transited to New York City with Ikaris close behind. While there, they encountered Iron Man, before detecting a rogue Deviant in the sewers and quickly subduing it. Sprite and Ikaris then returned to Olympia, where they were informed by Phastos that Zuras had been murdered. Now being the prime suspects, Ikaris and Sprite fled the scene and followed a trail that led them to the ruined city of Titanos, where they encountered the Mad Titan Thanos.[9]

Ikaris eagerly battled Thanos, but Thanos proved too much, so Sprite created an illusion of Ikaris to distract Thanos while she and Ikaris escaped. The pair returned to Olympia and told their fellow Eternals of Thanos' return. Phastos later revealed that the wardens of the Exclusion were dead and the resurrection chamber was inoperable, so Zuras couldn't be resurrected. Also, the chamber was connected to Earth's biosphere; if it wasn't fixed in time, Earth would be rendered uninhabitable for humans.[17]

Sprite participated in the investigation of Thanos' return and Zuras' death at first, but she was later assigned by Ikaris to watch over Toby Robson, a young boy Ikaris vowed to defend, while Ikaris conducted the investigation. When Earth's biosphere began acting up due to the damage to the resurrection chamber, Sprite helped Toby get away from a burst of energy. Later, Sprite and Toby's family discovered Toby dead. When Sprite informed Ikaris of this, Ikaris realized that Toby's life was taken to carry out his latest resurrection. Because human lives were given to resurrect Eternals, Sprite and other Eternals wanted to fix this. So, they visited the Deviants of Lemuria, asking how to become them.[18]

Powers

As an Eternal of Earth Sprite is descended from the original Eternals created by the Celestials and is further empowered by Kronos' experiments with the cosmic life-force.

Near-Immortality: Eternals like Sprite possess total conscious control over their molecular structures, which are reinforced by cosmic energy. As a result, they are virtually immortal and indestructible.[19]

Super Strength: Sprite can bench/press at least several tons. However, he can increase this though his levitation and telekinetic abilities.[19]

Illusions: Sprite is extraordinarily skilled in the use of illusions. His illusions affect all five senses and are virtually indistinguishable from the 'real thing'. He is considered a Class 5 of 5 Eternal when it comes to his skill at illusion-casting.[2] After centuries of practice, Sprite's illusion powers transcended typical illusions, which allows him to alter perceptions of reality and people's memories to a significant degree.[4]

Telekinesis: He can mentally move and manipulate objects, living creatures, and fly.[19]

Flight: Sprite can fly at high speeds through telekinesis.[19]

Matter Transmutation: Sprite is able to transmute nearly any item or being into almost whatever he wishes. His matter-manipulating abilities are nearly equal to Sersi's.[2]

Weaknesses

  • Sprite can't grow and is stuck in an eleven-year old-like body.[4][9]

Paraphernalia

Transportation

  • Teleportation, either by their own power or by using the Great Machine's transit system.[9]

Notes

Sprite (Earth-616) from Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z Update Vol 1 1 001

Sprite's former appearance

  • For most of Sprite's publishing history, Sprite was male. Shortly prior to the release of the Eternals movie, it was revealed that it is common for Eternals to change their appearances (and/or gender) upon their rebirth every 20 or 25,000 years or so.[9] This was used to change Sprite's gender to match that of Sprite's Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart.
    • The same thing happened to the Eternals Ajak and Makkari.
