Synopsis for "Book One"
One day earlier, the Abu Shouk refugee camp was attacked by the Janjaweed militia and four weeks earlier, Nighthawk and Hyperion fought at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Six days earlier, the Pentagon attempted to identify a killer (believed to be a mercenary) in Sudan, while two days afterwards, the killer drove into an alleged Janjaweed base in Mistariha and massacred many of them, while driving a jeep. After two more days, General Alexander tasked Hyperion with finding the killer in Sudan and also revealed that a shard with the exact same composition as his alien ship was found in Mistariha.
In the present, Mr. Thayer briefed Hyperion about how how the genocide in Darfur happened after his arrival at the Abu Shouk refugee camp, as well as the killer's alleged nationality. One hour later, as Hyperion flew over Darfur, he believed that humanity had demonstrated a historic capacity for brutality and that the Janjaweed were using fear as a weapon and method of controlling the populace. Then, he realized that the killer was no mercenary, but actually Nighthawk, who revealed that he had plans for him, before the two fought again. Hyperion was surprised when Nighthawk was able to hurt him, but the latter declared that the former would never figure out how.
