History

Circa 6000 BC, about 12,000 years after the cataclysm,[1] Stegor was the king of the nomadic tribe of Homo mermani barbarians who wandered and plundered the Eastern Sea, the eastern part of what is now the North Atlantic Ocean. His arch-foe was Tanas, king of the similarly-barbaric and nomadic Western Sea Tribe.[2]

Both tribes sought a homeland and desired to claim the sunken ruins of Atlantis and the long-forgotten treasures of the surface-men. Since neither were willing to let the other claim that prize, the two warring tribes were determined to fight to the death and came to the ruins to do so. Stegor was accompanied by both his brother, Orrek, and his son, Kamuu, who was still just a boy.

As was customary, the two rulers engaged in single combat before any other fighting began. Riding on dolphins, Stegor and Tanas battled in a joust of kings and Stegor's lance pierced the heart of Tanas, killing the western king. In response, Queen Elanna, widow of Tanas, personally led the charge against Stegor's hordes and vowed that Stegor himself would perish by her hand. During the ensuing battle, Stegor threw a spear that killed Elanna's standard-bearer, prompting her to hurl herself at him and knock him off his mount. The two then fought with swords and Elanna quickly overcame Stegor, driving her sword sideways through his body. Then, as Stegor fell to the ocean floor, Elanna took her standard and drove its spear end through his lifeless heart and into the earth, declaring, "Elanna rules the seas!"[2]

Notes

  • According to the Tales of Atlantis story in Sub-Mariner #64, the war between the two nomadic tribes took place in the sunken ruins of Atlantis which had been a city of ghosts on the ocean's floor for the 5,000 years that had passed since the Great Cataclysm. This would place the war and the founding of undersea Atlantis at c. 13000 B.C. However, other stories and various Official Handbook entries give different dates.
  • On some maps of the Hyborian Age the body of water to the west of the main continent of Hyboria is called the "Western Sea" or the "Western Ocean" but this was not all controlled by Tanas. Instead, Tanas only controlled the westernmost portion of that ocean while Stegor's realm was the easternmost portion.
  • While the image of the two kings jousting while riding dolphins was interesting, it would have been unworkable since dolphins, as air-breathing mammals, would only have been able to stay underwater for up to ten minutes at a time. Having to return to the surface to breathe so often would have seriously disrupted any attempt to use them as mounts, especially deep down near the ocean floor.
