- —General Strange[src]
History
During the War of the Seven Spheres, the Vishanti tapped Stephen Strange to be their general, leading their armies against those of the Trinity of Ashes. In return, they promised to return him to Earth soon after he left, without having aged.
The war dragged on for five thousand years, forcing Strange to break more and more of his moral compunctions in the name of survival. His heart further broken by the deaths of people close to him, like Cadet Jarnat, he took more and more extreme measures to pursue victory. Orgoth, Strange's close friend and right hand, tried to kill him in the 4,512th year of war, reasoning that there was no longer a moral difference between the sides so it was best to end the war by any means. Strange executed him after arguing that he needed to win the war no matter what so the sacrifices he had made would mean something.
Five thousand years after the start of the war, the Trinity of Ashes sued for peace out of fear for the general, with the condition that he be locked away for their protection. The Vishanti agreed and split all of General Strange's wartime memories off from him and sealed them in a crystal, reverting him to a doctor. This binding was tied to his life force, meaning that when he died, the general's spirit was freed.[2]
Without a body, General Strange killed evil magicians like Jasper Jeniver, Duke Archos, and Chorfus and stripped their skeletons to construct a new one.[3] His next priority was building a new army to finish the war, so he began abducting the astral forms of children like Esther Oh to have them pilot great war machines. When Nightmare interfered, General Strange impaled him to a tree with spears that could not be removed.[4] At some point in time he set up camp at the Strange family farm in Nebraska, then killed Aggamon as a 'gift' for Clea.[5]
He attacked the wedding of Umar and Tiboro to abduct their unborn daughter, whose half-Faltine soul was incredibly powerful. He overpowered her parents, Doctor Strange, and Clea, giving the latter a hint to his location before leaving.[3] Clea followed him to his camp and pretended to join him as a ruse so she could stab him with a Mysterium dagger. He survived and set her enslaved sister against her, then defeated Doctor Strange, who had made a deal with the Trinity of Ashes for the power to kill their mutual enemy.[6]
General Strange was defeated when Doctor Strange, with the aid of Wong and Doktor Zee, grafted a piece of his own conscience to the General's soul, causing the General to regain his empathy and compassion. Doctor Strange then relocated General Strange to a room in the Sanctum Sanctorum, pledging to help him recover one day at a time.[7]
To aid in his rehabilitation, the doctor gave him Cobolorum, a sentient role-playing game.[8] They worked together to build beautiful worlds, greatly improving his mental state.[9]Personality
