History

During the launch of Project Rebirth, Dr. Abraham Erskine offered Agent Carter to proceeded to the viewing booth, but she elected to stay in the room for the procedure, leading to other men present for observation doing the same. This caused Nazi spy Heinz Kruger to detonate his explosive device earlier, before Steve Rogers' procedure was finished. Kruger managed to kill both Doctor Erskine and the SSR head Colonel Phillips, while also wounding Rogers. Kruger then tried to escape with a vial of Super-Soldier Serum, but Agent Carter shot and killed him. Colonel Flynn tried to get Rogers back inside the Vita-Ray Chamber, but he was in no condition to. Flynn then tried to salvage the project by having Howard Stark do it, but Stark refused and with no time remaining, Peggy jumped in instead to undergo the procedure herself.[1]

Steve recovered from his wounds and remained close to Peggy, who despite being the first super soldier was prevented from going into the field by Flynn, now the new head of the SSR. After a mission to recover the Tesseract from Hydra was denied to them, Stark and Carter decided to go behind Flynn's back. Stark created a uniform and a Vibranium shield for Peggy, who as "Captain Carter" went on a mission alone, captured Hydra scientist Arnim Zola and retrieving the Tesseract. Stark then used the Tesseract to power his latest invention - the Hydra Stomper Armor, with Rogers selected to be its pilot.[1]

Learning that Rogers' friend Bucky Barnes had been captured, Peggy set out to rescue him from an Austrian Hydra facility. After she liberated Barnes and the other prisoners, they were intercepted by a tank detachment outside. Rogers arrived from the air in the Hydra Stomper Armor to provide support for Peggy, and the two of them destroyed the enemy forces together. Barnes and a few other liberated POWs formed the Howling Commandos, a unit that assisted Captain Carter and Hydra Stomper in many SSR operations throughout the rest of the war. Steve and Peggy grew close to each other, but neither was able to commit to their feelings.[1]

Near the end of the war, Captain Carter, Hydra Stomper and the Howling Commandos went on a mission to capture Hydra leader Johann Schmidt. However, they were lured into a trap and the HYDRA train exploded, seemingly burying Steve and the Hydra Stomper Armor under an avalanche of snow. He was recovered by Hydra and brought to Red Skull's case at Castle de Krake, where both Rogers and the Tesseract were removed from the Armor. Not long after, Captain Carter and the Howling Commandos assaulted the Castle in a final decisive strike against Hydra. Bucky and the Howling Commandos found Rogers alive, and he Steve asked his friends to put him inside the Hydra Stomper Armor and and to charge it with conventional electricity, which would only provide enough for a very short time.[1]

As soon as the charging was completely, Steve shot to the upper levels where Peggy was battling an interdimensional monster that emerged from the Tesseract-created portal. Overjoyed to see him, Peggy asked Steve to get the Howling Commandos out when the monster began destroying the entire castle. Rogers used the Hydra Stomper Armor to get the Howling Commandos out of the collapsing structure and returned back, where Howard Stark was unable to close the portal because the creature held it open. Peggy decided to sacrifice herself to push it back inside, and Rogers with the Hydra Stomper Armor out of power, Steve only had the time to say a final goodbye to Peggy. She went inside the portal, enabling Stark to close it for good, and leaving Steve once again alone.[1]
