Synopsis for "The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
X-Men #4

The X-Men are in the middle of their latest training session. Marvel Girl is given the task of lifting a lid from a box using her telekinetic powers. Once it is opened, she finds a cake stashed inside! Professor Xavier explains that it has been one year since classes first started at the school, and he felt that the date should be celebrated.

Meanwhile, four other mutants, known as Toad, Mastermind, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, are seen having dinner. Mastermind tries to impress the Scarlet Witch, but she is not interested in him. Mastermind threatens her, but Quicksilver intervenes to protect his sister. Magneto is elsewhere, seen stealing a freighter and returning it to his secret headquarters somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. When Magneto returns, Toad informs him that Quicksilver and Mastermind were fighting. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch tell Magneto that they do not want to be members of his group anymore, but Magneto informs them that they are forever in his debt. The group has a flashback to a town in Europe where Magneto saves the Scarlet Witch from an angry mob that wants to kill her for burning down a barn with her mutant powers.

Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants use the stolen freighter to attack the small nation of Santo Marco in South America. Professor Xavier learns of the attack and contacts Magneto on the astral plane using his telepathic powers. Professor Xavier and Magneto dispute their different views on mutant and human relations; Professor Xavier believes that they should coexist with one another, while Magneto believes that homo-superior should rule the world. Mastermind creates an imaginary army to frighten Santo Marco's populace so that the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants can easily take over the country.

Professor Xavier and the X-Men travel to Santo Marco under the guise of an American professor and his students on a goodwill mission. Once they are in the country, the X-Men change into their costumes and attack the Brotherhood. Mastermind tries to scare the X-Men away by creating an illusion of a fire wall in the X-Men's path. Professor Xavier realizes that the fire is not real, so he enters it to show his students that there is nothing to fear.

The X-Men devise a plan to attack the Brotherhood, but do not realize that the palace door has been booby trapped with a bomb. Just before Beast opens the door, Professor Xavier senses the danger and hurls himself in front of the X-Men to protect them! The Brotherhood escape from the palace, but not before Quicksilver disarms a second bomb intended to destroy the entire nation along with the X-Men. Professor Xavier regains consciousness only to learn that his telepathic powers were damaged by the explosion.

Iron Man #4

The issue begins with Tony Stark reverting The Freak to Happy Hogan with the Enervation Intensifier, while Pepper waits behind a protective wall. Meanwhile the Unicorn is getting dosed by a machine called the Hyper-Activator, with the purpose of increasing his strength and power; even though the scientists present want to shut it down as he is getting a very large dose, the Unicorn tells them not to. After ripping the table he lay on from the floor and getting a redesigned costume, with the protection elements eliminated and the powerhorn made more powerful, the Unicorn takes his leave of the scientists as the Hyper-Activator freed him from the brainwashing he had undergone. The Unicorn sets his sights on a scientific congress to get his hands on a cure for the negative side effects of the Hyper-Activator treatment, a congress Tony Stark is attending. The Unicorn terrorizes the attendants with his new powers, making demands in front of the television cameras present, until Tony Stark manages to hide away long enough to change into his armor. The two begin to fight, Iron Man bringing the fight outside and eventually crushing the Unicorn's powerbelt and tossing it in the nearby river, provoking the deranged Unicorn to dive after it. Iron Man tries to save him, but the Unicorn has disappeared.

A strange man by the name of Killgrave, with purple skin, walks into a bank and demands a large sum of money, and surprisingly, the bank clerk offers it without question. After Killgrave leaves, the teller believes he has been robbed. Quickly arrested by police, the "Purple Man" is brought before a judge. where he refuses to be represented by a lawyer. The judge assigns him one anyway: Matt Murdock.

When Murdock visits Killgrave in his jail cell, Killgrave tells Murdock that he doesn't need a lawyer. He demonstrates by asking the guard to let him go, then asking Karen Page to accompany him. The both comply. Although Matt isn't affected, he waits until everyone else snaps out of Killgrave's control, then follows him in his guise of Daredevil. Killgrave orders bystanders to attack Daredevil, forcing him to retreat.

Killgrave amasses a small army of strong men from a local gym and takes over the Ritz Plaza hotel. Meanwhile, Daredevil prepares his miniature tape recorder and other gadgets built into his billy club.

Later, Daredevil chases Killgrave up to the hotel roof, where the Purple Man orders Karen to stand on the ledge of the building and forces Daredevil to comply by holding him at gunpoint. Killgrave explains how he got his uncanny powers. While spying on a lab for a communist country, he was accidentally doused with a chemical. When he was caught by the plant guards, he found that he was able to bend their will, and soon decided it would be best to become a criminal.

Daredevil jumps off the side of the building with Karen and swings her to safety, then returns to fight Killgrave. He subdues the villain with the special cape that he built into his billy club to retard his abilities. He then turns the Purple Man over to the police with a tape of Killgrave's confessions.

After removing his costume, he returns to the Nelson & Murdock law offices, where he finds that Karen is okay; however, they both keep their feelings for each other to themselves.

Detailed Summary:
With the Ghost as his pawn, Mephisto lures the Surfer back to Earth and guides him into battling the Ghost, who has been terrorizing the people of New York City. As the two battle, the Surfer and the Ghost appear to be equally matched, with the Surfer refusing to give up his soul. Mephisto decides to secretly join the battle on Earth and help the Ghost with his battle.

The Ghost grabs a human hostage and threatens to kill her if the Surfer doesn't give up his soul. He falters, not wanting to lose his soul and also not wanting an innocent to suffer. This makes the Surfer open to the Ghost's laser attack, because he does not want to strike back for fear of hurting the human. He determines to use the Power Cosmic as never before, by gathering his power from the infinite reaches of space and harnessing it. He uses it to launch a pinpoint strike at the Ghost, disabling him and freeing the hostage.

The Ghost fails in collecting the Surfers soul. Wrought with guilt over the Surfer's chastising for threatening an innocent, the Ghost renounces Mephisto. Despite Mephisto's threats, the Ghost begins to fade back to limbo. However the Surfer sheds a tear over the torment of the Ghost's soul, thus breaking the curse, freeing him from the bondage of limbo, and giving him eternal rest. Mephisto departs, but not before vowing to never accept defeat.
